Newbie question - Pro-logic and Dolby Digital

paulfoel (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 9th February 2001, 13:35

Hi,

I`m just about to buy a DVD player. At the moment, I`ve got a Pro-Logic capable TV onto which I intend to attach my DVD player (via SCART, if I remember rightly its RGB OK).

Anyway, I know that most DVD players can output Dolby Digital 5.1. Am I right in saying that you need a decoder for this ?

What sort of sound quality will I get by using SCART to my TV ? Will it be Pro-Logic still ?

Paul

yup it`ll output Pro-Logic to your TV, and yep you need a decoder to do the DD5.1.

RGB is the way to go.

as a special note if you check lots of DVDs have a ProLogic/Dolby Stereo track as well as the 5.1 mix and this will sound LOTS better through a normal TV/Stereo system than the 5.1 will

otherwise the poor player has to convert the 5.1 to Stereo - which can never be a good thing

Paul,
You will get Pro-logic through your SCART and TV without needing anything else. To enjoy the full benefits of Dolby Digital 5.1 you will need a decoder/amp and subwoofer etc.
