Forgetting that the term is an oxymoron of epic proportions, i`ll just be glad if its not Becks.

Let`s not forget the important part of the title.. "Of the Year". Before the rugby world cup, a fair few people (including myself) had never heard of Johnny Wilkinson, so it`s fair to say that if he does get it, it just goes to show that everything that every other sports personality `hopeful` has done for the previous 10 months amounts to nothing.
Oxymoron indeed

It`s almost certain that Johnny will win it but people are getting carried away by his kicks and forgetting the only reason he was in a position to kick the points is because of the other 14 players on the field with him , a good No. 10 ( or any other position ) is useless without a decent side around him .

Should be Brian Noble.

It no doubt will be JW, but in all honesty it shouldn`t be. Like a poster above has said, it is the other 14 players that make him who he is, so really someone like Martin Johnson or Jason Robinson deserve just as much acclaim - hell, the latter scored a good try in the final, and not just some kicks.
But I also echo another point: please do not be that twat Beckham.

I think he does deserve it. Easily.
The fact that there are other players there `helping` shouldn`t suddenly detract from his performance. When Michael Owen won it there were another 10 players. When Steve Redgrave won it there were..... etc. etc..
Fact is the guy scored loads of points for England, not only in the World Cup but in past tests too. England would not have won the World Cup if it weren`t for him.
Let`s not forget his MBE too. This was also gained well before his performances in the World Cup - which most people don`t seem to realise. He is not just getting this award (yes I think it`s a cert) on his World Cup performances but on a great year and I for one won`t try to demean his award by adding other players..
Beckham? what the f*** has he done to deserve it? Nothing.

Of course JW should win it! He scored stacks of points this year and not just in the World Cup but also in the hugley important summer tour down under. He is the best player in the world bar none.
Rik, you say it should not be him. Who, may I ask would be your pick? You can`t discredit one and not suggest another worthy winner.

TBH I never really pay any attention to this award . That said I reckon this lassies record over the last year, and more, have been quite special. An award to J.W. would be placing his contribution to the winning of the tournament above the contributions made by the rest of the players involved in all the games at the World Cup.
The players themselves would probably not resent or begrudge him winning the award but surely as the title is "Sports Personality" singular and not an award for "Teams" then it would be sensible to award this to an individual sportsman or women involved in an individual sport..
Here would be my winner.
Paula Radcliffe.
A brief resume of Paula Radcliffe`s year .
Paula started 2003 in even better form than she had started 2002, and she set a world record for 10km on the roads with a superb win in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 30:21 on 23 February. Her London Marathon win then depleted all available superlatives as she took another 1 minute 53 seconds off the world record with 2:15:25 and set world bests en route at 30km (1:36:36, compared to the initial IAAF mark of 1:39:02) and 20 miles (1:43:33). She went through 10km in 32:01 and halfway in 68:02, before a second half marathon of 67:23.
As I mentioned I pay little attention to these awards and have no idea if she won this award last year but in all honesty her achievements are quite staggering. These achievements are the result of the work and extreme efforts of one tiny wee eight stone lassie so I think she would be a worthy winner.
Choagy :)
