Newbie question again - PAL/NTSC and Region codes etc.
Hi,
Just bought a Wharfedale DVD player which I understand can easily be hacked to accept all region DVDs.
I`m just a little confused with this PAL/NTSC thing. I know that UK is PAL, North America NTSC etc.
If I play a Region 1 DVD in my player will the output be NTSC ? Will I need a multi-region TV for this ? Or will the wharfedale handle this ?
Looking at the manual it seems to say that an NTSC disk will work bu outputting PAL but its a little confusing. Can anyone supply me with a better explanation ? Especially if you`ve actually got the Wharfedale and corresponding manual and have had success.
BTW. The TV is a few years old Goodmans 28" DPL.
RE: Newbie question again - PAL/NTSC and Region codes etc.
I`ve got the Warfedale and it plays Region 1 NTSC discs on my Samsung TV which is about 10 years old and as far as I know this is not an NTSC TV.
I think what the Warfedale does is convert the NTSC signal into PAL.
(Can anyone back me up on this?)
RE: Newbie question again - PAL/NTSC and Region codes etc.
Thats the impression I got from reading the Wharfedale manual...
I`d be interested to hear from anyone else with a Wharfedale on how good the quality is (bearing in mind this conversion).
Basically, is it worth me buying Region 1s or is it better to wait for Region 2s ?

We have the same setup, A Goodmans 285DPL and the Wharfdale 750. When trying to play NTSC signal disks it causes a problem as the TV is locked to PAL. Although the Wharfdale lets you alter the output doing so still screws up the picture which goes black and white and loses it`s vertical hold. Does anyone out there know of a way to get around this?
RE: Newbie question again - PAL/NTSC and Region codes etc.
Have you tried pressing the "TV System" button on the remote of the Wharfie DVD, this worked for me as I was getting black and white with R0 discs.
RE: Newbie question again - PAL/NTSC and Region codes etc.
Yeah, i tried that and it just goes into black and white flicker central. I have even tried hooking it up to my portable and switching it to PAL and then swapping the cables around but it doesn`t like it all. It must be something ot do woth my TV. If anyone out there knows of the Goodmans 285DPL tv can somehow be unlocked to accept an NTSC signal I would gretly appeciate it if they could let me know.
RE: Newbie question again - PAL/NTSC and Region codes etc.
Are you using a RGB SCART connection between the player and TV?
If so, and the TV still flickers, there`s not much you can do apart from buying a new TV. It *may* be possible to stop the flickering by adjusting the vertical hold inside the TV, but this risks spoiling compatibility with PAL stuff.
However, some Goodmans TVs (including my W288NS widescreen) do require a specific AV mode to be set - AV4, in the case of the W288NS - to enable NTSC compatibility. Have a look at the instructions and see if such a thing is needed on your TV.

Bugger. Just got a Region 1 DVD on order as well....
I`m connecting my Wharfie 750s to my Goodmans 285DPL using SCART. Surely it should be OK with this...
Also, can`t you set the wharfie to send PAL, PAL60, or NTSC ?
Am I missing something here or can you just play the region 1 disk and set the player to output PAL ?
RE: Newbie question again - PAL/NTSC and Region codes etc.
I`m not too sure what is supposed to happen here. I have tried switching the output on the Wharfdale DVD to PAL but in doing so the image onscreen goes into flicker central. The TV has 2 scart sockets but the onscreen menu`s dont really have many options. The manual states that the TV has been permanently set to PAL, yet there is what looks like an option regarding this in the onscreen menus, unfortunately this option is locked out. It almost seems as if there should be some way to unlock this and allow the tv to funcion like any other. I mean, if the player will work fine on my ancient portable tv without any hassle other than the multi region hack then surely there is something I can do with a much newer and better set, perhaps some engineers code or something to unlock the ability to display an NTSC signal?
