Post Office Question

Dance Like A Monkey (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 21st January 2004, 22:20

I sold a PC on eBay which was working fine when I posted it via Royal Mail. It has turned up at the address, but when he plugged it in he got a burning smell. He opened up the machine and the motherboard clips had snapped which resulted in it touching the case and frying the board. As well as this, two of the cards (I think he said graphics card and modem) had come out of their bays and were just rattling around in the machine. He is accusing me of not having screwed everything in properly (although does admit that it must have been while in transit that everything was knackered) and wants his money back.

I took out insurance with Royal Mail to cover the full cost of the PC (I only got £150 for it). But if he tells them he thinks it was badly put together, do I get nothing? Or does the fact that it was working fine before I sent it mean it was their fault?

The other thing is that I asked the woman at the Post Office to put a Fragile sticker on it, but I have been told that when he received it there was no such sticker.

Any advice, as always, is appreciated.

I think you should refund his money, then take up the matter with the RM.

You can get a "Claims form" from the PO which you send off to claim.

If you refund his money ASAP, the more likely he is to be nice about you. Leave him pos feedback aswell if the money went through OK.

I dont see this guy telling the Royal Mail that he thinks its your dodgy workmanship thats to blame. If he says that, it means you wont get any money back from RM and him having to wait alot longer for his refund.

Also, i sent an Alien Quadrilogy of a couple of weeks ago and asked the cashier to put a fragile sticker on it. I was a bit shocked when she informed me that she was almost sure the fragile stickers where seen as a kick here stickers in the deparments that handle parcels :o. She said Royal Mail get more damage claims from parcels with stickers on them than they do parcels without. Of course she may be bullsh*tt*ng, but i dowt it.

I find it hard to believe that someone would plug in & switch on a computer when there wasn`t somewhere obvious to connect the monitor to....and as for the motherboard clips being broken, if that`s happened in transit there must surely have been some serious damage to the case.

Talk about opposing opinions! :D

I had already spoken to him on the phone and arranged to refund his money straight away (it wasn`t his fault after all). He is happy to send me back the PC as is, if I pay him the postage.

Obviously, I would sooner get the money off the Post Office, as in my opinion it is their fault so why should I be stuck with a busted PC?

I have asked him not to mention his opinion that it wasn`t assembled correctly (they are going to send someone round to look at it), but if he does do I have a leg to stand on?

Here is the problem description from his email:

Quote:
I am very uphappy with the machine I have received!

None of the components appear to have been properly secured within the cause using the correct screws etc.. The motherboard clips appear to have broken causing the board to make contact with the case. Obviously I did no realise this when I first turned on the machine, the board shorted and there was a burning smell. I don`t know if the damage has been cause in transport but this would not have happened had the machine been built correctly in the first place. Needless to say the motherboard appears to now been blown completely and the machine is no longer be functioning without a replacement.

When I first removed the PC from the packaging I found that both the graphics card and front cover plate were both rattling around inside the case.. After opening the case I found that none of the cards (graphics\modem\sound) had been properly secured, the screws did not fit correctly which meant it was very easy for the cards to move.

He might have broken it himself mind. You know, the postman delivers it to him and he`s so happy to use his new PC, he runs with it up the stairs and trips on the cat, the PC then goes flying through the air, tumles down the stairs and is completely f*cked.

I didnt buy this PC by the way and i`m not the buyer either, however convincing you think my scenario is, lol
