Help with my Sony S336

Court (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 12th August 2000, 20:34

I bought the S336 today in replacement to a faulty Scan SC2000. What can I say, wow it`s really good, sounds amazing, picture is superb with blacks being really black and no blocky images.

However, I have a normal 4:3 TV, according the Sony`s manual I should set the aspect ratio of the TV to 4:3 pan & scan, the manual says that this will display the wide picture on the TV and cut of the bits that don`t fit, in other words the picture should fill the screen. However whenever I change the ratio to 4:3 pan scan I get a letter box view (blacks bands top and bottom) . The image is also stretched out more than on the 16:9 mode. To combat this I have to change the ratio to 16:9 (for wide TVs) to get a decent size image, however the image is still letter box but taller on this ratio.

Can someone please help.

4:3 Pan & Scan is a feature of the DVD format specifications, however hardly any studios use it. So for 99% of your discs it won`t make any difference at all sorry.
