Page 1 of Smoking in Pubs
General Forum
Lots of talk in the media at the moment about the possibility of the Government banning smoking in public places. I was in the pub on Sat night and when i got home i noticed my clothes stank of smoke. Pub wasn`t very busy either. I`m an ex-smoker so i have some sympathy for those still addicted to the weed. I suppose a ban may work in the trendy high profile pubs but how can they expect to enforce it in the backstreet boozers where the majority of punters seem to smoke. Anyone know how the ban is going in Ireland?

Having been to New York, where smoking in public places is banned, it was very nice eating out and not having food ruined.
As a non-drinker, can`t say I tried any of the pubs though. :)

Ive been an assistant manager in a 1000 capacity bar for a couple of years now and managed to give up 30 cigs a day habit over a year ago but can`t seem to decide whether it would be a good idea to ban it or not in bars. Even though i wake up every morning coughing my guts up feeling like i have smoked 30 i reckon it would definatly affect sales as i would say around half of the drinkers are smokers. Would be nice to have a trial run hey to see how it goes............. oh! and feel remotley healthy
Well I know that as a non-smoker, I for one would be grateful not to be the victim of passive smoking and smelling like an ash tray after a night out ;)

I think it`s a great idea. Sooner the better. I`m sure it`d help in people giving up smoking. I don`t see why anyone should have to breath in other peoples smoke at restaurants etc. I do really feel for smokers though, I have friends who smoke and have tried and struggled to give up yet still smoke.
I think it is a very bad idea.
Sure, ban it in restaurants as it really isn`t all that difficult to go outside - or the restaurant to supply a smoking area.....but.....
...banning smoking in pubs is bang out of line - I like to smoke with my drinking and don`t think that I could handle going outside every time I fancied a drag. I mean, I`ve heard a lot of non smokers still moaning when they have half the pub as a non-smoking area and the smoking area is rammed so that it`s uncomfortable to stay for more than one drink (I like to sit down and have a good chat around a table with friends or family - not stand in the middle of the pub being pushed around by people trying to get past every ten seconds - AND most of them are probably the non-smokers getting up to go to the loo ;-)).
Come on people, think about it......you like to go to the pub......which may well not be there if they ban it all together as a huge amount of people simply wont go and the pubs will have to shut.......!
I am a smoker, and I know it`s not particularly nice for people who don`t - but I am allergic to fish and the smell makes me heave and, as a result, I am totally put off my food when someone on the table next to me kindly orders themselves a nice bit of seafood BUT I don`t expect, or demand, that the restaurant stops serving it do I?
Rob (smoker if you hadn`t guessed ;-))

The ban is hitting public spaces in Canada in June, already bars & restaurents have dedicated smoking rooms.
I like to breathe when I`m having a drink. I also may have a desire to fart (can be very smelly!!) but tend not to unless I go to the loo so as not to offend anyone. I also like to go home afterwards smelling not of stale fags but something rather nicer (even sweaty would do!). Where are the extractors in pubs? Oh there they are!! Oh dear, there not working!
Someone`s fish and chips may smell unsavoury to some but it doesn`t affect your health (unless you`re eating them!). Smokers tend not to just have one cancer stick but have one every few minutes. They also tend to blow their disgusting smoke into someone elses face. No don`t ban smoking in pubs.....put them in the cellar and let them die there coughing up their own phlegm!!
As you can probably guess I`m a non-smoker.... (you didn`t?).... but tend to partake in involuntary passive smoking....which I find a little revolting.
Have one for me......it may be your last!! 8)
As a pious ex-smoker (of cigarettes ;) ), I always go straight for the non-smoker section of a bar. I dont know if im particularly sensitive to it, but i cant stand the smell anymore.
I would welcome a ban, because, frankly, it turns my stomach now!
Now if they legalised `it`, on the other hand...........
Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent.
Forty percent of all people know that.
