Can anyone recommend a good place to get a beginners fishing rod for my 11 year old son
I know nothing about fishing and need a place to start :)
try
https://www.bosfish.co.uk/f_index.html
This place have been around for ages and seem to have good deals most of the time.
I`ve had stuff from them in the past when I fished.
you may be better off getting a cheap adult rod and reel for you kid rather than a "kids set". they never seem to be much good. and wont last half as long.
The Coarse Float Outfit for £29.99 looks like a good deal. and has most of what you need to get started.
hope this helps.

Where do you live ? and what type of fishing is he interested in ? fly , sea or freshwater etc , although your best bet would probably be to take a visit to a local tackle shop and ask for advice as most will be helpful and give you good advice in the hope he will stick at it and keep returning there for the bait and tackle etc if you do have a decent shop nearby they will normally give you a good discount .

Spot on Wayne. If you want to start a reputable tackle shop is by far the best way to start.
Ask a few mates if they know of any good stores in the area (everyone knows at least one person who fishes ;) ), take your lad in and start from there.
You might find cheaper on the internet, but the advice an experienced fisherman can give you will prove invaluable.
Where abouts do you live? I know a few reputable places in the cotswalds and Derby areas.

Didn`t lidl have a load of fishing stuff recently?
Yes, must have been last week. Had 2 rods and various hooks, lines etc, may have some in stock still.
Many thanks to everyone that has replied - I`ll look at all the options suggested!
