DVD commentaries - waste of time?

Tony Vado (Competent) posted this on Monday, 26th March 2001, 01:06

It`s very rare to hear an engaging, entertaining c/track. They normally consist of the director droning on about re-shoots and lighting, or actors babbling incoherently. I`ve sat through about 30 of them and can`t remember a single one that I enjoyed. Can anyone recommend any that might change my mind or are they all worthless?

I agree I think there a wasre of time, I would sooner have cheaper DVDs.
Also showing you scenes they cut out, well if they cut them out of the film why do they think we would want to see them. If there not good enough for the film, then they are not good enough to go on the disc are they?

yeah i generally agree. most of the commentaries ive heard are pointless as are other extras. i never read the production notes or plough through all the storyboards etc. i think theyre a waste of time.

having said that though, i really enjoyed the commentaries on fight club and particularly mallrats - p*** funny!

I actually like listening to the comentaries. It allows you to see why certain things were done and can bring to your attention things you didnt notice

i have 45 dvds and have yet to listen to a full commentary. I heard a bit of commentary form the whole nine yards but thats it. The commentary should be in textual format not audio but i think they are interesting and a vital piece of dvds. They should also be shorter

I found the commentary on `gossip` and the one on `final destination` interesting but I generally agree commentaries aren`t anything special
but if you really love the film and it`s a classic that you`ve watched loads of times then maybe the commentary is interesting.

I have to say that on certain films i really welcome the audio commentries as i have always been fasinated with film making.

Some can be utter bollocks but there are a few that are well worth a look.
The commentry provided by kurt russel and john carpenter on "the thing" is brilliant if you havent seen it then i would suggest you do.
Also the commenty on goldeneye was interesting.

On the whole most of the commentries suck but there are a few that do more than drone on about lighting etc

The Thing commentary is excellent (Russel & carpenter where both drinkin, or smokin some serious stuff during it)
