Page 1 of Speed cameras - mobile, fixed etc

noticed a variety of different ones on a trip today.

1) van/mobile ones - anybody know the distance these guys get? cos you dont see them for a while

2) fixed gatso ones - they simply use the lines painted on the road so once you over the lines you are not flashed/checked for speeding

3) these almost like cctv ones - but have two extra bits at either side. again, anybody know the range of these? or how they work?

4) hand helds - no explanation needed me thinks, but again a range would be nice.

Those will most likely be the new digital SPECS averageing speed camrea. They work by reading your number plate taking the time and date, then later on down the road there will be another one which does the same thing. The distance is known between the two camreas and from the two times recorded, can do a Distance divided by Time calculation to get your average speed.

(Distance / Time = Speed) Anyone know how you can convert the speed into miles/h as I have made a little programme to do this and I get the wrong result! ggrrhh!

So in affect, no slowing down then speeding up after you passed as it is timing you! :o

I have heared that this system can record 60,000 offences in an hour and if you where lucky enough to go though this sysem a few times a day, you could lose your license within a day! :o :o

SPECS: what kinda distance do they cover? and how quick do they send out the notices? like if i dont get any over the next two weeks am i safe? somebody told me they aint in proper use yet? do they still need to be shown clearly in terms of like a yellow/orange background? cos the ones with teh orange i stayed within the limit for, but i saw some that were without any backgrounds but i dont think i was within the limit at that time.

You wellcome, if you look at the top of the page where it says "Home" and "Genaral", further along you will see a tab called "Speedtraps" click it and you will be shown a list, selcet the type of speedtrap you want to read about from there.

SPECS camras can cover a whole strech of road and because they only need one camrea at the beging and end of the road, if you don`t stick to the limit, it will calculate a higher average speed.

Also being automatic in operation (requires no officer`s to go collect film etc) the computer can print out a NIP and it will be in the post within about an hour hence why it can process 60,000 offences an hour.

don`t these cameras still have to have some backing to show they are there? cos i was on the m6 and for the ones where it was highlighted in orange (i.e. during the roadworks) i was within the limit at all times i.e. from the start of the roadworks to the end. but when not in roadworks i wasnt (who is?). it is the ones that didn`t have the backing that i am worried about. *sigh* aside from those i think i was within the limits for all the gatsos etc etc.

and all this cos i ended up going to a wedding that i didnt wanna go to in the first place. sheesh - such is life.

My day driver (taxi) got caught last week at roadworks on the way to
Edinburgh airport by one of the mobile vans.
As the letter was sent to me(owner) and there office was only 10 mins away
i took the letter up and asked to see the photo as it says you can view it if you wish.
It turns out it is a video camera they use and grab stills.
The very nice lady showed me three pictures of the front of the cab :o ,yes,the front.
The first at about 230m and doing 41 in a 30 and the next two closer.
This is when i started to ask a few questions.
She told me the mobiles use video as mentioned above and the pictures are
pretty clear of the motor but not that clear of the driver(you could tell it was male).
I said that i thought you could not take the pictures from the front but she said it had been passed the the human rights thingy and it was ok to do so,what about the static
ones i asked, not at the mo but it will becoming in the future she said.

Edit:- Just had a read on the SPECS link and it seems to be the same thing in the mobiles.

Pictures from the front are a bit of a bone of contention just now.
The biggest problem they face is motorcycles.
They have not required to be fitted with a front facing plate for decades,and there really is not the facility to do so on modern bikes.
I stopped at a mobile camera site the other week and had a right go at them.
They are required to advertise their presence by placing a sign within a certain distance of their site.( I don`t know the actual distance figure )
However,these particular `safety` nazis had placed their sign on the pavement behind one of those pedestrian barriers so that it was not visible to traffic.
Definitely a deliberate ploy,and definitely not cricket.
Scummy twats.
Especially scummy as they were catching folk LEAVING a 30 zone accelerating INTO a 60mph zone !!!!
You`d think t`other way round was more akin to `safety`, but nooooooo...
Apparently catching people accelerating 20 yards before they are actually entitled to is of massive importance.
I got an NIP (notice of intended prosecution) the other day as well.
For doing 50mph in a 40 zone apparently.The truth being I was braking from a 70 zone into a 40 zone and was still,unfortunately,doing 50 when they camera`d me.
Tragically,for them,they took 22 days to issue the NIP.
So it`s null and void and I wrote back to them saying so.
How many folk would know to do that though ?

We`ve had this debate many times before I know. But you wouldn`t have reason to complain if you just kept to the speed limit :)

All the Police are doing is enforcing the law. You seem to think that speeding is OK yet I doubt many of you would go shoplifting :)

Speed limits are there for a reason. Look at the braking distances that happen at different speeds. Quite astonishing.

Hypothetically, your son/daughter is run over by someone doing 35 in a 30 zone. Had he been going at the correct speed, it would have meant that your child would have survived. However, they were not, so they didnt.

By your logic, you wouldnt hold it against him as 35 `isnt really speeding`.

Its pathetic `why arent they out arresting real criminal` apologists like you who would be the first screaming for speed cameras.

If you dont want to get fined, dont speed. Its as simple as that. Believe it or not, Bowfer, the laws of the road are their to protect the public, not to make your life a pain in the arse.
