Should poncing about on a horse be in the Olympic?

RJS (undefined) posted this on Wednesday, 25th August 2004, 14:11

This has been winding me up a fair bit since the Olympics started, I don`t know if its my working class roots showing or what, but I really think all sports involving a horse shouldn`t be in the Olympics.

No other sport with an animal is in it after all.

The absolute worst is that event on just now which is simply poncing about on a horse, which surely the horse itself does most of (okay it has had a lot of training and all, but even so) the work and the rider just sits there.

Am I alone?

What about Fatima Whitbread :)

Seriously though I think the performance of the horse is actually governed to a certain extent by the skill of the rider. I myself think that equestrian events should be part of the Olympics as in all fairness the riders do, I guess, put in a helluva time training with the horse itself. The time spent training should not necessarily be the sole criteria for acceptance in to the Olympics but historically horsemen have had a remarkable influence on the history of the last four hundred odd years so maybe that might make it more acceptable to us non- equestrian viewers.

I agree with RJS on this one. When was the last time you saw one of the riders getting off their horse, barely able to stand through exhaustion and dripping in sweat? A long time ago I reckon! ;)

I thought the Olympics were all about amazing `human` achievements (or not as the case may be.....not mentioning any names, there`s already too much been said on that topic ;-)) not animal ones, as amazing as it is that anyone can put that much time in to training horses to behave so well.

My feelings may well be to do with the fact that I don`t really like horses - I don`t trust anything that has teeth that are nearly as big as my hand.....each :D, but my Dad used to train horses for the police with his Dad when he was younger and he loves horses, and watching dressage above all else but I do remember that, before his dementia set in good, he used to question the validity of them with regards the Olympics. So I`ll stand by what I`ve said: no, they shouldn`t be in the games at all.

So there :p

Oh absolutely!

Horse poncing should be in the Olympics, as should all other sports that are rarely
seen elsewhere, or sports that are restricted to one nation. Stuff like Table Tennis, Shooting, Synchronised diving hardly get any airtime, and neither does horse poncing. In fact other similar sports should be resurrected. Sheepdog trials, darts, kabbadi.

Like basketball and baseball, American Football should also be allowed, as it gives the rest of the world a chance to humiliate the Americans at their own sports ;)

One sport that has to be dropped from the Olympics schedule should be football though. I watched the highlights of Iraq v Paraguay yesterday and it was the funniest thing I`ve seen in ages. I`m surprised Britain doesn`t send a team. They should send Leyton Orient, that`d about do it. :D

No it shouldn`t. Neither should tennis, football, gymnastics and table tennis IMHO.

Did you not see how atheletic the table tenis was?

I have problems with sports where it is subjective. Did they do the move well? Like in the mens gymnastics. I don`t know whet the aperatus is called, the one bar where they swing round it. Anyway the Rusian chap was fantastic, the crowd were going mad for him, the judges put him in third. 10 mins of booing and jeering later the judges improved his score. ????. The next man to go was not as good but scored more points. In the end the Rusian finished fith, but he knows he is the real champion by the crowd reaction.

No, poncing about on a horse should not be in the Olympics.

All the best,

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

I don`t think horses should be in it either...it`s about feats of human endurance, and physical ability surely?

I saw the russian on the bar, he should easily have won it, the judges looked very un-nerved when the crowd started booing them. They looked like they were expecting a riot. :)

I don`t think table tennis shoulds be in either. It`s not a sport is it, it`s a game (mostly what you played at youth club as a nipper). :)

They should have new sports in like kitesurfing, kitebuggying etc, as they`re very similar to windsurfing and sailing, and good spectator sports, but still don`t have Sports Council recognition due to the number of people who do it (can you tell I`m biased on that one...lol). :D

Yeah, when was the last time you saw an Archer or Pistol shooter collapsing under the strain of competition?

I dont really like (or, ethically speaking, agree with) Horse Prancing.

But its a `sport` popular enough to be considered for the olympics. Where do you draw the line? When you go down that train of thought all that would be left would be the `Pure` track and Field events. Which would be lame.

Grin, bear it and just laugh to yourself that it truly is the only sport a Royal could have ever (or will) represent their country at.
