Best Multi-Remote?

Giz (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 10th April 2001, 12:55

I`ve now got 5 remotes in my living room and that`s a couple too many. I want to replace them with a single remote that can control every component. What I`ve got is;

Hitachi 32" widescreen TV
Denon amp
Denon DVD player
Sky digital
Awia VCR

What`s the best remote that people have used? Anyone got one of these expensive (£70) quid LCD remote? Any good?

Try a phillips pronto - Richer Sounds have them for around £145.95 - its fully customisable using pronto edit software on your pc, has a backlit touch screen display and tons of pre written files to run your gear complete with the right icons for your setup (someone somewhere will usually have done the hard work for you and made the ccf file it needs to work available for free) - it can be programmed to run macro`s so you can select say your "movie setup" switch on tv, amp, sattelite etc (can even dim your light if you have those infra red dimmers..) - iv`e had mine for about 8months its a dream... life has never been so uncluttered.... and the wifey can use (no offence dear - but she and techno stuff don`t mix..)

The Cambridge Audio all in one touch screen is a lot cheaper but does not have the same flexibility as the Pronto - I had one for a about a week but took it back to the nice guys at Richer who exchanged it for the Phillips.

Or of course you could go for the "all for one devices" - they may be all you require.

It all depends on your budget i guess and whether you can be bothered to tweak the Pronto to get it to work as you want it..

A One For All 5 should do the trick (tho` in my experience there`s always one component that won`t do the biz). Check out Index/Argos end of season sales - I got mine last year for £14, and it`s a Godsend !

I`m torn between going for the cheep 1-in-5 type or going the whole hog and getting a full on programmable job.

Does the 1-in-5 remote work correctly with sky digital (i.e. getting the tv guide up etc.) Also, can you get it to always control the volume on your amp regardless of the currently selected component? Everything runs through my amp and this is really how I want to set it up. Can this remote learn or is it restricted to the build in codes? I`m guess the Phillips does all this and more, correct?

Well I can`t answer for the all in ones, but the Pronto can learn all codes as far as i`m aware (as long as its not a Cable and Wireless Digital box using the Pace innards, as that use a higher frequency and different codeset - big thread on the Pronto users forum...)

Learning is simple - just point and click
As for the volume thingy - you can programme the "hard buttons" on the top for global or individual devices and make two buttons on the lcd display for something else.. its just a question of your own imagination really - it is a toy that needs tweaking but then as i never had toys as a child.... :-)

A good place to have a look around is:

http://www.remotecentral.com/index.html

just look for the pronto / rc500 pages a good FAQ and a searchable index if you want to see if anyone has already "made" the required .ccf file for you equipment - if they have it just cut and paste using the free pronto edit software...

I have the Phillips Pronto and so far every thing
i have programed into it has worked ,Panasonic tv,
Panasonic video,Grundig sky digital decoder,Pioneer
717 dvd,Denon a10 amp and my Pioneer NS8 mini system
it does every thing on all of these.
It is a pig to program without pronto edit on.
You can download the software from Phillips for
free from there website and it has some good links
to sites like remote central.

Hope this helps

One 4 All is fairly limited, but it recognises my Pace OnDigibox, and lets me access the MENU without problems.

Also, yes, it just ups/downs the volume on my Yammy A5 - should do the same on your amp.

Thanks for all the advice. After having a good look through remotecentral I think I`ve decided to go for the Pronto. There`s something about the idea of being able to program it / download new screens / learn any code (except high frequency ones) that really appeals to the techkie in me ;)

Just got to justify the £200 (inc charger) for a remote control to myself now!
