Need to make a template of a wash basin and toilet pedestal

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 5th October 2004, 18:03

The template will be used to accurately cut some laminate flooring to go around the pedestals of the wash basin and toilet. If anyone has any bright ideas of how to make a template first, this would be most welcome. Cheers.

I had to do this recently.
Get a piece of paper (A3 size) and put it on the floor then just push it up against the base of the toilet/sink so it bends upwards. It creases and everything (make a few rips in the paper too) but get a pen and draw around the base. Cut it out and then offer the paper template up again and mark any places where you need to adjust and trim again.. Then just put the `template` on the laminate piece and draw around. Does the job. :) If the first piece gets a bit knackered just use it to cut another with a trim allowance and do it again.

Can`t you put the laminate under the pedestals?

I lifted my toilet gently and was able to lay the floor underneath it.

You were lucky getting it under the toilet but you`ve got no chance getting it under the sink.

Make sure you get the decent stuff suitable for bathrooms.

Ok, thanks guys. Did the old paper trick when I laid the current vinyl (?) floor. It was a bit hit and miss but got there in the end. Just wanted something a little more accurate this time around as will be laying Floormaster Aqua Loc this time and can`t afford to make a cods up on that stuff. Don`t think I want to consider messing with trying to raise sink/toilet. bit risky IMO.

We used the Aqua LOC stuff from B & Q a couple of years ago, put a bead of clear silicone on all of the joints, prior to clicking into place, this provides a better seal and keeps the water out. This is best if you have kids who like splashing about!

Fold your piece of template paper in half. Put it at the side of the pedestal/pan and mark the front and back extent of the pedestal/pan on the paper. Move the paper round to the front and place it so that the fold lines up with half-way and mark the side extent. Cutting both halves of the paper, make a rough outline of the pedestal/pan and offer it up to check for accuracy. Keep adjusting until you have a perfect fit. Finally unfold paper and cut along the fold from the top of the paper to the edge of the hole. Put the paper down on the floor and see if it fits perfectly round the pedestal/pan. Adjust as required. When you`re happy, use the paper as a template and transfer the line to the flooring and cut that to match.

Viola, it is done 8)

Thanks again for the tips. Haven`t started yet on the flooring, so time to experiment a little. Was wondering if using a "flexicurve" would help. Those of you who have had any dealings with technical drawing/draughtsmanship will know what I mean.

Hi Fitz,
how were you planning to seal up against the toilet/sink pedestal as this can sometimes be used to fill any small gaps (bearing in mind you might want/need to get the toilet/sink out at a later date)?

Riggs
PS Flexicurve will probably be as hit and miss as the paper method methinks.

I`m too old for this sh*t!
