Uncomfortable and sensitive subject

I`m a no one (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 19th November 2004, 14:12

I am a regular of dvdreviewer but because of the below message i have create a new profile just because this has made me very uncomfortable. This message is about images of a young child, do not read on if you are shock able or if child are a weak point for you.

I was looking at one of those websites that have weird, funny etc pictures like steak and cheese or m90 (it was neither of these sites) and there was a picture of a mature woman in a school uniform with a link to a newsgroup. After finding out how to get the newsgroups I downloaded the software and went to this newsgroup. I went to click on a file but opened the wrong file. In this message was 3 images of a young girl (definitely under the age of 16) the first pic was of the young girl standing with only her knickers on. The second was of her standing (front ways) naked covering her genital a with both of her hands and the third was of the young girl seating (front ways) on a couch with her hands covering her genital a but you could very slightly see the side of her genital a and where her pubic hair would be when she grows up.

I am an open minded type of person and not easily shocked but when I saw the pictures I shut my computer down and did not know what to do. I couldn't stop my hands from shaking even as I and typing this my hands are shaking.
I have since gone on the internet and done a little research about pictures of young child and in some countries if the pictures are not sexual and are "artistic" then they are not illegal.

What the hell do I do?
Should I tell the police? Are these pictures classed as artistic or is it child pornography. If I didn't tell the police and they found out could I be arrested?

Yes, you should go to the police and report exactly what you`ve done and what you found. The only way to stop this kind of activity is to make a stand, even though it might well cause you some initial discomfort. From your description of the 3 photo`s in general, it is highly unlikely in my view that they could be classed as artistic, particularly as they elicited an extreme reaction from you. I think your gut instincts are right. If nothing-else, you may help the police gain a foothold into an investigation of a ring they may not have known about.

It is unlikely that you would be traced and arrested as you didn`t pay for the images. I agree with Si, go to the Police and tell them what you found and where - see if they can help stop this disgusting practice.

You have to report it, as Si says its the only way to get rid of such filth.
take a look at the internet watch foundation`s site .. www.iwf.org.uk to find out what next to do. i think if you report to them, then they can advise you on what to do next.

stay outta them newsgroups!

You made an honest mistake. Report it. If you have children of your own or know people who do, would you have wanted them to see the pictures ?

report it to the website above, i would also contact your local police station ask to talk to somebody about it, show them how you got to the site by providing the link...

i think we all like to look at amusing sites with jokes and people doing some strange and wierd things, as many are posted on here with links to them... but this site have clearly crossed the line of decency, and should definately be stopped!

I think anysite that links to people who are vulnerable, or children, or show material that has an effect on people like this clearly has on you, then they should traced, those involved dealt with by what ever means is possible in the country they are based, and at the very least the site must be closed down.

No need to apologise if the situation was an accident. As you say, you weren`t actively seeking out child pornography, and accidentally finding something isn`t a crime. Otherwise e.g. a witness to a bank robbery could be charged as a criminal accomplice.

Go to the IWF address given above. Chances are that the site isn`t in this country, so it`s unlikely our police would be able to do much. However, IWF, though based in the UK, will tack down which country the site emanates from and inform the relevant police authority and internet provider.

Once you`ve notified IWF, I`d advise wiping your internet cache (try something like Wimdow Washer, which can be downloaded for a trial period).. Technically you`re probably breaking the law by retaining the images. Even though it`s wildly improbable that you`d be prosecuted given the situation, it`s better safe than sorry. In any case, I can`t imagine you`d feel comfortable having thos eimages on your computer.

Provide the links as suggested & show them the route you took, clean your own internet history of cookies & images as a backup just in case the police want to take a peek at it though.

If its any help to you at all to make the right decision (not that you need any such help), a friend of mine last year logged onto her b/f`s computer & found kiddie porn on it.

As she browsed it & saw the extent, she also came to the conclusion that he had been slowly grooming her to act as a procurer for him.

She contacted the Police, they siezed both computers for evidence & charged him, he had to retire to his parents house in Cornwall. Where unfortunately for him someone else who knew the couple, let it be known to some concerned fathers what & why he was living at home with his parents again while waiting for his trial, I understand they gave him a little talking too on the error of his ways.

Seriously though get in touch with the local police. The more information they can gather regarding unsavoury sites the better.
