PayPal Scam

Shaanbles (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd December 2004, 11:16

Got the following email from our IT department:

Please be aware of a PayPal scam doing the rounds currently.

Those of you who use Ebay and Paypal will occasionally receive emails from both parties (actually the same company)

It has been brought to our attention that an email proporting to be from paypal claims your account has been suspended and you need to logon to the paypal website to reinstate your account - the email also provides a very handy link - which takes you to a webpage that looks exactly like Paypals - BUT ISN`T!

If you enter your login details into this page - they will be recorded by the site and almost certainly used to drain whatever funding source you use for PayPal.

This scam looks very convincing - and is very simple, as all they need is your username (email address) and password to be able to use your account.

BE AWARE of any emails of this sort (from banks etc) and delete them immediately.

In my experience, anyone who grants even the legitimate Paypal/Ebay access to their bank account is clean off their trolleys anyway.
I quickly realised their accounts are a mess and I quickly cancelled the direct debit mandate.
They get their fees by good old fashioned cheque.
At least I`m in control then.
:p

Cue loads of e-mails stating "never had a problem"
Well bully for you.
