Is it time for Beckham to hang up his England Boots and let some decent players take over?

The man unveiled his new mullet today - what has this got to do with football.

Beckham`s footie has been very weak of late - by even his own admission - I think it`s time Shaun Wright-Phillips had a shot.

What do you think?

Don`t know a thing about football, but I have always seen Beckham as a Rich Chav and wish his publicity in the media and ads would just disappear.
Sorry, can`t comment on the football. I know nought.

Yeh he`s well finished!

His `publicity` work is getting in the way of his football & has been for a few years now. He`s just depending on his name and reputation when being picked to play for England & R.Madrid. I agree , get big Sam in as manager! If Sven was a real man as opposed to being a mouse he would have dropped Beckham a long time ago!

Unfortunately phanny Sven has openly stated that Shaun will play on the left.
Sven then explains "I know Shaun does not play on the left but I think he will manage it".
What a f***in sphincter this man is.
One of the best right sided players in the UK at present and this cretin plans to play him out of position.
FFS this man is either besotted by Beckham or is scheitte scared of Posh. Either way if he is not brave enough to drop Beckham then in all honesty Sven should go. Failing that then the FA should reconsider his position as he is clearly selecting players for reasons other than football.

I`m sorry, but seeing Beckham play for Madrid in the last couple of games I would say he`s looking fitter and far more energetic than ever. His workrate was 110%; I really wouldn`t go writing him off yet.

Many England fans are far too fickle. If Beckham had a good game in the next England match, you`d all be singing his praises.

No one is writing Beckham off the point is the following game is a friendly. If Shaun WP does not merit a game in his favoured position then when the f*** is he going to get a go.
Beckham may have had a couple of good games recently but he has been selected in earlier games when his form has been far poorer than it may be at present.
The real problem is that Sven apparently stated a couple of months back that he had to select certain players due to commercial reasons. So the real question should be just who calls the shots, Umbro/Nike/Adidas or some other corporate body.

BTW IMHO Beckham is a very good player, no more and no less. I do not and have never thought he was "World Class" as so many "Experts" reckon. Then again "World Class" seems to mean less with each and every passing season .

Thats a fair point, and ideally we`d play Beckham in the middle. And I agree that when his form has been poor he has still been picked. But if you think back to his performance in Euro 2004 - then was he any worse than Gerrard, Scholes or Owen? In fact I`d argue Gerrard had the worst performance overall, especially taking into account his gaff against France. But due to Beckhams (self imposed) image and his captaincy he takes alot of the flak.

SWP should get a chance - but then if Beckham is playing well as well then he should surely be picked first due to being the captain? If Beckham isn`t playing well, then by all means drop him. But if we`re basing the England team on form, then surely shouldn`t Andy Johnson at Palace should be in the starting 11 for the next game?

BTW, don`t forget Owen is another favoured player who gets picked no matter what his current form is. ;)

I on the other hand do rate him as world class; his passing and dead ball kicking is second to none. He does deserve to be playing in one of the best teams in the world.

There lies the crux of the matter. If Beckham is playing as well as SWP then Sven has a decision to make. Give an exceptionally gifted player the chance to shine at the highest level or play safe and select Beckham. A player who has played at the highest level and in Sven`s eyes, and many others, has nothing to prove and will not improve as he in all probability is as good as he will ever be. So why persevere with a known quantity when the option to try someone who has undoubted star potential and quality is played out of position.
With regards to Paul Scholes, he was one of Englands top performers and deserves nothing but admiration and respect for his contribution, and many goals, to the national squad. That said how many times did we hear of and see him being played out of position and not "Doing the business" for England. Is that Scholes`s fault or the manager, I know who I would blame.

I am not ignoring the fact that others have been selected when playing poorly I simply cannot and will not agree with Svens automatic selection of Beckham . The very notion that a player who is the captain of the team will be selected simply due to him being captain is utterly wrong. Merit, nothing more and nothing less should be the sole criteria for selection.

True, but then was he another player being picked due to who he was rather than his form? He hadn`t performed well in an England shirt for a while, but was still getting picked. The reason why he retired perhaps?

But then again, by playing Beckham you have a decent captain who all the players respect? Also, I think you`d have to look at the nature of the game. I could understand playing SWP in a friendly, but a major competition? I think I`d have to go with Beckham if his form was currently good.

I suppose you could look at Portugal, and argue who would you play out of Ronaldo and Figo on the right wing? That`s the same kind of thing, and I would probably go for Figo purely down to experience (the same as Beckham). :p

And anyway, I suppose the fact that there`s a debate over who should be picked for our RW evidently shows a healthy England team and a decent young players coming through. :D
