Are they MAD on e-bay?

jonpeat (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 24th May 2001, 14:26

Are the people who bid on e-bay mental...I`ve just seen Miss Congeniality R1 go for £19.50.....without P+P......you can buy it new for less than that! I`ve just sold a whole host of old videos...not for silly money but at least it means that I can buy a few more DVD`s. I think I`m going to get addicted...Money for old rope etc.
:)
My login name is funsterbunster if anyone wants to check out what I`ve got left...not much at the moment, all of its been sold...waaaahhhoooooooo.

I think you pretty much said it all. It`s odd how they have the compitence to find and bid on an online auction, yet still lack the ingenuity to type "Region 1 DVD UK stockists" or similar into a search engine. Baffling!

Auction psychology. It gets `em every time.

Person 1 will see a DVD with a starting bid of, say, a quid, and think "Gosh! That`s incredibly cheap! I must have that!" So they place a bid and wait.

Then one or more other people come along and do the same thing. Suddenly Person 1 is not the top bidder any more, and he gets very upset. "But that DVD is MINE! I bid first! I have to get it!" So he ups his bid, and so on and so forth.

Auctions rely on the fact that bidders will be too proud to accept defeat easily, even if it means paying well over the going rate for an item.

A friend of mine uses multiple accounts to "bid up 2 the punters.....

Highly unethical !

I`ve noticed this and thought of e-mailing the bidders to tell them that they could get a disc cheaper new and save a few quid. In the end I always say "Sod it, If they`re stupid enough to be bidding between £18-£22 for a R1 disc they deserve to get conned!" What are these people on???

Fecker - tell your mate to be careful. People have been prosecuted for exactly that in the US...

BTW. It`s always risky - what happens if you try to bid yourself up too far and end up winning your own auction ?!?!
