Help Required - Niagra Falls, Canada
:/ I am looking for people who have been to the Niagra Falls, Canadian side! I was planning on getting married there but I have just been told by a friend that although it is somewhere really nice to go an visit getting married there wouldn`t be their choice as the area has turned very commercialised and resembles Blackpool! If this is true then obviously I don`t want to get married there. Could anyone else offer any advise?
Thanks :)

The last time I went was waaaaaay back in `91, it seemed quite nice back then, no idea what it`s like now. Biggest touristy things I saw were the IMAX theatre and loads of london buses running around

Yep, its just like Venice, well comercialised, (the locals have to make their money).
But with both attractions you only have to travel a short walk outside the usual tourist routes to see the real deal. Well worth it :D

My advice would be to go to the American Side - we found this much nicer than the Canadian side, which was not what we had expected.

Imagine Southend on Sea along the top, all T-shirt shops, restaurents & arcades.
However the actual lower promenade itself looking down to the "basin" is unspoiled. :)
Well worth a visit & very romantic spot to get wed, in the "right" location.
Jusr be warned the falls themselves are "not quite" what you expect, when you compare them to what you have seen on film ie Superman 2, but still great (been twice now). :D

As Rassilon said.
Table rock - at the top of the falls - is great. They`ve kept it relatively clear of touristy stuff. Loads of people though.
The main area of Niagara is very touristy. We didn`t even venture into it, although we did drive through it. Made me glad we`d just decided to do Niagara as a day trip rather than stay there. Niagara on the Lake is nice - away from the falls and very picturesque (if a little twee). It really depends what you`re after.
The falls aren`t particularly tall, but the volume of water going over them and the noise is amazing. Would happily go again to them.

The falls themselves are magnificent even better in the summer when you can take a trip on the maid of the mist boats. We stayed two nights in a hotel (2004) with a view of the falls but spent the main day on a trip to Toronto.
the whole town of Niagra is tacky and makes Blackpool look clasy! Blackpool is fun & kitch tacky whereas Niagra is just plain tacky. See the falls but avoid the town.
The Canadian people however are very freindly and mean it when they say have a nice day.

I went several years ago with my parents and seeing the falls was great. There weren`t so many IMAX cinemas then, and I think that was the only touristy thing there apart from the falls.
We went on the maid of the mist, helicopter over the falls, and in the tunnels behind, which are all great.
My parents went again a year or so ago, and they said the falls were obviosuly still great, but were disapointed that the main tourist strip was completely US tourist influenced, trying to be Vegas/ Blackpool :(
They had a better time going to the places a bit farther out from the falls itself, the neighbouring villages/towns looked very picturesque.
So basically I`d agree with douglas99a above.

Apart from the Clifton Hills area, (tacky) I thought the Canadian side had more to offer in terms of scenery etc. Just my own opinion of course.
However, if you go, you just got to do a helicopter ride, which at the time I was there, was only available from the U.S. side.

Fitz - you can now get them on the Canadian side too. We didn`t do it, but others we were with did.
I don`t know about the tackiness of the American side, but you definately get a better view of the falls from Canada.
