What type of speed fine?

Gavski (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 3rd March 2005, 18:22

Ok, I have just had a nasty letter through the post.

On the weekend was caught doing 85 on M4 near Bridgend.

I know, i know - its wrong - but i`m not here for a debate on what a twit i was.

What can i expect the fine and points to be?

On some sites I have just checked its says up to 15 mph over would be a £44 fine plus £30 costs and points. But just after 15 its a higher fine??

I`m all confused and feel a bit stupid. Can anyone shed light on this for me.

I havent seen the letter yet as my wife read it and got all flustered down the phone.

Cheers!

Gav

I`m not sure about your fine ( £60 ? ) but more than likely the van that caught you was a white Peugot van on the bridge above the motorway just before J 35 westbound and is there almost daily.

Blimey - wonder what they set the camera at - nearly everything on a motorway is doing 80 these days.

why take life so seriously..its not like you are going to make it out alive

I think I heard somewhere that you can get away with 10% over the limit before they do ya. i.e. 77mph on`t motorways.

Not sure, but I was caught on the A1 doing 15mph over the 50mph limit and got £60 and 3 points.

I got caught on same stretch doing 78 at 5.30 am, it was £60 and 3 points, but got ticket from a patrol car not the van, just expired :D back to 0 points, yeah!!!!

Sorry about the bad news BTW, mine a bit of a long story but cut down version is driving to work in 4.5 tonne van, looked in mirror and saw cops chasing a vectra, decide best to get out of the way so put my foot down, (very) slowly accelerate from 65-75 to overtake a tesco lorry, next thing I know vectra on inside lane doing no more than 50, no sign of the cops, turns out they are right on my bumper, inches from it so I can`t see them on my mirrors, mile or so down the road they back off, blue lights on, pull me over, ticketed.......

Did I apeal, `kin right I did, their response, they have video evidence that I was tailgating another car so pay the fine or go to court and face a higher fine/possible ban for driving without due care, send another letter back saying it was 5.30 am, no other cars on the road, next I heard was a court summons, pay fine in 7 days of face a CCJ or similar, can`t remember what it was now but enough to make me pay up and bend over to take the points. >:(

All the best

Ger.

£60 and three points...

write to them explain it could have been you or your partner driving but are unsure?
can they send a photo to confirm the driver... if not you could contest it!

I you go to court though be warned it can be between 3-9 points and a maximum £1000 fine + costs

To be honest (look at my sig) it could be less hassle to accept it... insurance companies dont generally penalise you for a single speeding offence, i just took mine as a lesson learned!

nearly correct they have a tolerance of 10%+2 mph, so in theory...

30mph = 35
40mph = 46
50mph = 57
60mph = 68
70mph = 79

Please remember that Police Officers are human beings and can use their discretion... cameras are indescriminate, all they see is speed, not manner of driving!

The letter should make it very clear whether or not you`re being made a `conditional offer` of a fine and points and it should mention what the offer is.
You shouldn`t have to ask on here.

Still got that lovely little animation I see. :/

That is exactly why I hate cameras. >:( You can tailgate someone at 60mph in heavy rain, camera ignores you, driving at 85mph on an empty motorway, flash.

(No points on my license btw, before anyone thinks I hate them because of that. :))
