RE: [VIDEO] Does anyone wash their own windows?
Didn't Alfie just utter those exact words?
I lived in a maintained block of flats so they had a contract with someone - but now i'm in a house again I need to think about the same thing with how to reach the top windows.
My dad used to sit on the ledge with legs inside and lean out with cloths etc to clean - but he's a tight b**strd.

RE: [VIDEO] Arsenal 22/23 Season
At least we have the same transfer issue right now - no one wants our recent record signings! How do we convince another club to take our stinking rubbish?

RE: Trial Depp n Ex
I didn't know what to think when it all first began - but it seems that AH has somewhat embelished things.
I had to deal with domestic violence from my ex-wife, she always said to me no one would believe me as I was a 6' 1 big guy and she was a woman...
So this is my sympathy with JD - whether she raised a hand to him or not, the point is she purposely went out there to ruin his career.

Well this is it...we hope to see him stay, but he's temperamental.
Always look forward, never back!
I'll take North London champs for another season, make it 6 or 7 by then?

No St Totteridge day for you boys yet again! Put some effort in next season, yea?
Much love to the rest of M.R community.

RE: Anyone know anything about camcorders?
A few years back...(actually was 9 years ago!) I was involved in a project with a group of kids where we made documentaries and Panasonic provided us with all our equipment for free.
This is the equivalent one right now, same functions, but i'm sure it's been upgraded since! Here
We also had a handheld mic and a boom, both worked really well with it and results were great - we came 2nd in a national comp.

RE: [VIDEO] 1917
I went to see this yesterday. I would recommend you all go along, when you can. Not only was it a great film it also used the 'one shot' technique - this made it appear as if the film was shot in one continuous long take, amazing. I do admit though I spent some of the film wondering were the cuts were. (some were obviously i.e dark rooms in to light)
In my conclusion, i'm so very glad I wasn't born at this time and had to fight in this war!

I'd probably favour the modular tbh.
But i'll wait at the side with Pete for someone to let us know where to go to get the best option.

RE: Whats happened since you joined? 18 years today...
Monday, 26th November 2001 (although when I click one one thing it says 2013)
I remember the exact day too, had just changed jobs and was sat at my desk on lunch hour looking for a DVD player hack. Found one and stayed.
What hasn't happened in my life!
16 jobs (contracting) I feel like the littlest hobo! Moved out of London to the SW, moved back to the SE. Married, daughter, divorced in that time. Living alone now with my cat and just a few 4K blu-rays. And a funko habit.
Happy-ish.
I don't come on here as much I should, but that's life eh.

RE: How much tax would you pay if you earned £100k?
I was unwittingly, and for 6 days only in a tax avoidance scheme. So I can see how easy it is to fall into.
It was my first contracting role about 5 years ago, before that I had always been PAYE. My umbrella company was recommended to me by the agency that got me the work, so I just presumed that was how things were done.
They paid me minimum wage for the days I worked, out of the money the employer paid them. Then the umbrella company asked if I wanted a loan, so then I 'loaned' myself the rest of the pay. So that, basically was un-taxable!
2 years ago I had a letter from HMRC telling me I had used a tax avoidance scheme and that I would have to pay back the tax I missed. Luckily this was only for 6 days work and a small amount.
However, I have seen in the news recently the amount of contractors that have been doing these schemes (as told to by these companies) (and legitimate in the eyes of HMRC at the time) some have been left with bills in 10s of thousands, I even read about a couple who had done these schemes for 10-20 years and owe £100k +, one poor soul even took his own life because of it.
Needless to say when contracting now I am self-employed and have an accountant!

RE: Heat and IR (I'm back)
Well everything except the sound bar is working now with remote. Buttons on the side are fine. The TV remote used to be able to control the sound bar remote too. I have changed the battery in this. :)
Just a 'Tales from the unexpected' moment when all remotes stopped working!

Heat and IR (I'm back)
Evening reviewer family
I've not posted for a while, but I still pop back to read as I continue to sort my life out.
(and celebrate a third year in a row of no St. TOTTERIDGE DAY!)
In the South-East this week you may know it was 33 degrees for three days. I was melting.
Anyway. On Tuesday night I couldn't use any of my remote controls (except main TV) the sound bar, dvd player and you view box all wouldn't respond. Also the main TV one acts as an all in one and that wouldn't operate the other electricals?
Checked for pushed in buttons to make sure there was no constant IR signal blocking them all.
Any ideas as to why this has happened.
I changed batteries, reset ones that could be reset and unplugged everything and then back.
Still weren't working last night, but thd you view box is now working...
It's driving me mad!!
RE: TV licence monthly
It's something that always confused me since I started renting/buying own house 20 years ago, I never really wanted to pay in a lump.
But why should i pay double per month, as I will always need a TV license I will never regain those 6 months of payments. It really doesn't make sense!!
So I pay quarterly as it isn't doesn't add anything!

RE: Ant drunk driving forces rehab
I do feel sorry for the fella, having been through some s***e in recent years. However, there's no excuse for him to be get behind the wheel of a car after drinking. No excuse for anyone.
So I hope he gets the help he needs to beat those demons because it should never be at the cost of someone else's life.

RE: [VIDEO] Cloverfield
It wasn't fantastic.
Pretty run of the mill stuff.
All I walked away from this one with was:
SPOILER:
So if this movie is supposed to run concurrently with the first Cloverfield how does the main guy on Earth have a full screen smartphone - ten years ago they weren't around. The first iphone had only just come out in 2007!

RE: [VIDEO] Cloverfield
Just turned on Netflix this morning and this was on there.
So watching it right now. Will update with thoughts later on.
I'd heard something was in the works around Cloverfield but didn't know it was Netflix!
Has Chris O'Dowd in it anyway :)

Looking forward to it - quite enjoyed the first one and always had a soft spot for EL.
On another note Blank Panther has picked up some good reviews on first look so will be off to see that when it's out.

RE: Smart Homes
I have Alexa in my flat, in two rooms.
She's connected up to all the lights across all my rooms.
Took a while to get used to ask someone to turn lights on and off, now it's second nature and I find it weird when I stay at anyone's house now who doesn't have it that I actually have to get off my fat arse and press a button!
All in all pretty good, although it's frustrating when Alexa doesn't listen to me or says she's done something when she clearly hasn't turned the bathroom light on! It's like being married again!

Just an update.
Common sense has prevailed and the ombudsman has upheld my appeal. Ticket cancelled.

RE: I know you all love a good parking ticket episode...
I remembered that I took pictures when I found it and you could clearly see the permit had slipped to the the side window.
I think I'm going to appeal, being that I actually "own" that land and on appeal to the company by showing the permit to them it should resolve it as a parking company are there to stop people parking there who don't live here.
And yes, I've lived here for 7 months now and they do the rounds at least three times a week. So should know the car by now.
Still annoyed!

I know you all love a good parking ticket episode...
I live in a block of flats that has private underground parking.
For this we all have little squares of paper (with no way to stick to windscreen btw) to show we are allowed to park in our space.
A few weeks ago I came down to go to work and found that I had been given a parking ticket for parking in my own space. My square of paper had fallen down the inside of the window to the little side A-frame window and I hadn't noticed.
I sent the appeal, as it's pretty clear, that although they couldn't see a permit on my car I sent them a picture of my license and car and space. Explaining it had slipped down the side, but I live here and have a permit.
Today, in the post I receive a letter from parking company. As you may guess they turned down my appeal on the grounds that there are clear signs in the car park that "permits must be displayed"
I have the choice now, pay £60 within a month or appeal to an independent body. Lose and I have to pay £100. Fuming.
What would you do?
I really want to appeal but if they sight the same rule as parking firm I really don't want to pay £100 around Christmas time.
Angry!!!!!

RE: Peaky Blinders
I read yesterday that BBC are making full boxsets available of certain shows on iplayer, including this. "To battle against Netflix", hardly a battle if you only have half a dozen shows. I digress.
Not watched any as yet, but now all may be available on iplayer I may indulge at some point.

RE: Nintendo SNES mini. Anyone pre-ordering one?
I had seen these when first announced and thought, I'd like to get me one of these.
Then I forgot about it.
About three weeks ago I happened to open Amazon up and a banner on the front page said get a mini-snes for £49.99 with Prime Now.
So I clicked it, expecting it to be some sort of "but you have to buy this too, and this etc etc" but I added it to my basket.
Clicked pay.
2 hours later I had one in my hot little hands.
I just presumed they were freely available again!
Anyway, nice little thing - but, I concur with you that the leads are a bit short!
