When i bough my Mk4 Golf GtiTurbo back in 99, everyone said how lardy it was, But now the MK5 is here it makes my old golf look like slimmer of the year! also the interior of the mk4 saw off cars that were in the 40-50 grand category, The mk5 has a fisher price looking dash, nasty :(

The great big fat arse on the new golf put me off buying one and the lights both front and rear are just wrong IMHO.
But apparently the mk5 handles well, and people tend to buy cars on brand loyalty, Not me.
Ask the dealer for a 24 hour test drive and see how you like it or not.

Go for it !

We have a MK4 TDi and it is a great car. Nippy, economical, bizzarely roomy and much better looking than the MK5 in my ( unqualified but none the less correct) opinion.

Had a mark 4 GT TDi 130 - 6 speed - it was a fantastic car.

The mark 5 looks a bit odd imo but again, i heard its a fantastic drive - test drive it first if you get a chance

I`d get one. Just `cos of the advert.

I`ve had quite a few Golfs,but the new one leaves me a bit cold.
However,I have the 2.0 140bhp tdi engine in my A3 sportback and it is a superb engine.
Prior to that,I had an A4 with the 1.9 130bhp tdi engine,which was more economical but very agricultural.
The 2.0 is a massive improvement.

Very very easily tuned as well,if that`s your thing.
£500 spent on an ECU remap will take you up to 185bhp easily.

That would give you Gti beating performance with 40+ mpg. 8)

I watched Top Gear of Fifth Gear or some program like that about the diesels verses the petrol engine, they said that on average diesels are about £2000 more expensive to buy than the petrol equivalent of that car and with the extra you pay on diesel fuel as opposed to unleaded if you drive it for 10,000 miles a year you only save abour £250 so its a lot of years before you make up that £2000.

So just do the maths and see if the GTDI is going to save you money over the GTI assuming thats why you are going for the diesel.

I was amazed just how expensive anything VW is. They don`t call them stealerships for nothing. You`ll be ok if you`re buying new then you`ll have a warranty, just make sure you sell it before it runs out.
e.g. Front brake pads/disks for a Passat TDI supply and fit - £250 :o So bought the pads/disks and did the job myself for £80 in an hour.

There`s a lot said about this and most of it is utter pish.
The full list price of a diesel may be more than it`s petrol equivalent,but who the hell pays full list price on any mainstream car ?
I defy anyone not to notice the savings they will make by switching to a diesel.
My A4 tdi did 49mpg no matter how I drove it,so I mostly drove it flat out.
49mpg from a car the size of an A4 ?
Amazing.

One should also take resale value into account.
Diesel engines are fast becoming,or already are,considered the `premium` engine in the range and are,therefore,more sought after.
They are a sounder `investment` (not that any car is an investment) all round.
