Mr Darling sorry always think of Blackadder when I hear his name, has put forward the idea of "pay as you go" travel details on BBC here or http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4610755.stm if the link does not work.

What are your views?

Pitfalls pros cons????

Excellent idea
Now those who do 20.000 miles a year have to find £26k a year to stay on the road. BRILLIANT
Got to hand it to that Darling bloke, He`s a genius.

I was always in favour of the idea of scrapping road tax altogether and putting the tax on fuel, therefore the driver will pay for the amount of mileage he actually uses.

However, I can`t help but think Mr Darling is introdicing this measure as an attempt to get more money out of us. The idea that you should get charged extra for driving in Peak times will penalise everyone that works a 9-5 job.

How much will the "black boxes" cost?

How much will it cost to retro-fit?

Will we have to convert 20 million cars overnight, if not the road tax and petrol duty would have to stay for the un-converted wouldn`t it?

To fit a tracking devive to every car in UK i`m estimating 50 Billion now in ten years time? 100 Billion maybe?

How much will the annual subscription be? (for that matter how much will it cost for the system to communicate to Big Brother?)

What happens to 6 v cars (like Beetles or other vintage /classic cars)?

How will visitors with no "black box" pay for the privilege? - like huge Euro lorries

Why can`t we have a cheap, clean, punctual public transport?

average use of a family car is 12,000 miles a year that works out at about 1p per mile to cover road tax,my car does approx 40 miles to the gallon thats approx 10p per mile, petrol tax is about 70 odd percent so 7p per mile add the 7p and the 1p together eqauls 8 p per mile to cover what the government already recieve....thats quite fair you think at first ...then you see that the government want to charge up to a massive £1.34 a mile.... they are nothing but theiving rip off b"%^$£rds.who think they can just keep taking off the motorist with no conseqences, well i think this time they are going to come very unstuck,as i do not believe that the motoring public will put up with it this time....

I travel on the M4 every day to get to work. If I had to pay £1.34/mile for that, then I (along with many others) would probably use the small rural roads instead. I`m sure many people living along these routes would object, pollution would end up in residential areas, accident rates would rise, journey times would be slower... No-one would benefit apart from the rich who don`t care about the cost .

I am very wary of solutions which rely on complex computerised systems. As well as being prone to error, they would be very expensive to set up and maintain - just additional costs.

The great irony is that it is those that do the most miles that need their cars more than those that do the fewest. My neighbour drives to the shop every morning to get his paper `cause he can`t be arsed to walk there (about 15min round trip) which is just laziness.

I use mine to travel 50 miles to work, a journey that takes approximately 60minutes on the motorway, but would take 3.5 hours if i took public transport. Yet i would be @rsewhipped by the Government whilst my lazy neightbour just coughs up the cash for his non-essential trip >:(

How much is it gonna cost me to get my black box chipped, so that I only pay a minimal sum? ;)

Is that the time? Give me a minute and I will be there when I finish on the comp!
