complete novice at plumbing !!

Pete_Sam (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 8th June 2005, 16:47

I was wondering if anyone had ever used the plastic speedfit stuff and if so how easy are they to use. I`ve never tried plumbing before and I really want to install a garden tap. I have previously bought the garden tap kit but they seem only to fit to copper pipe and ours mains pipe is plastic. Any ideas - ta!! :/

Speedift stuff is a doddle to use. Just make sure you cut the pipe nice and neatly - there`s probably a tool to do that, I have one for copper pipe - then just press the pipe into the fitting.

You can use Speedfit stuff with plastic pipe. You just have to put a little metal insert in the end of the pipe to stop it collapsing. Have a good look around Screwfix (www.screwfix.com) at their plumbing supplies. One important thing, though, an outside tap has to either have a non-return valve built in or have one on the supply side to stop contaminated water being pulled back into the house supply by siphonic action.
