Redundancy and Pensions

too good to be true (Competent) posted this on Friday, 24th June 2005, 18:56

A wowan in a local shop has worked their for 30 years.

The shop is due to close down but, the owner is keeping it open until the woman turns pension age in a few months in order not to pay her any redundancy.

Is this right. Does `pension` cancel `redundancy pay`?

There is a link between pension and redundancy, but it`s not quite as straight forward as that. I presume this is statutory redundancy rather than any sort of voluntary arrangement, in which case yes, the paymment could potentially be reduced or even wiped out, but only if she is over 64.

From the DTI website: Quote:
If you are aged 64 or over, your redundancy payment will be reduced by one-twelfth for each complete month you are over 64. This means that if you are 65 or over you will not be entitled to any payment.

There`s a fair bit of info on there, in a reasonably user friendly format HERE

Thanks.

I`ve forwarded the link to her.

I think a visit to the CAB is in order to.
