Going to London nowadays

Issac Hunt (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 27th July 2005, 15:53

I am off to London for a few days next week and, after the recent goings on, the company I booked it through have said I can postpone it if I want and go at a later date (which I hadn`t really considered til they proposed it).
I don`t HAVE to go next week, but I want to go sooner rather than later (all things being equal) and the next date I could go would be into September. Is it risky or should I just go? I`m tempted to go, but my missus thinks not (but she`s not going anyway!)

Myself and the wife are planning a trip soon.
I must admit we`ll probably use the proliferation of cabs in preference to the tube, but we`re not cancelling the trip.
If `they` start targeting restaurants/theatres,then we might think again.
However, the reportedly `rudimentary` type of explosive they`re using only really lends itself to bloody great rucksacks, which might not look out of place on a tube/bus,but would stick out like sore thumbs in other places.

I would still go. It is terrible what is happening but you cant live your life in fear. Also you could wait a year until you next go with no incidents in the mean time but whose to say that in 13 months time something like this wont happen again. I would just keep your wits about you a bit more than usual. But at the end of the day you could get knocked down by a car tomorrow but you dont worry about crossing the road.

I, like many, had a similiar situation when I was due to fly a couple of weeks after 9/11.

Look at it logically:-
1. London has always and will always continue to be target.
2. The level of security is probably higher now than ever and also in a couple of months (no matter how hard they try) people by their nature will become less vigilant.
3. You`ve got more chance being injuried in a car crash going to London than by a terrorist alert.

Only you can decide, but if it were me, I`d go now and get it over with.

I work in London, as do quite a few other people I reckon. I don`t think twice about getting on a bus, tube, train whatever...

You`d be surprised how many police(people) there are around now... I walked through leicester square this morning and as well as there being a van parked up with CCTV all over it, i saw five different sets of paired up coppers.. there are police everywhere, on the tubes, they come on the mainline trains with sniffer dogs, patrol the stations, and if they think anything is up, then they are all over it.. I`m really impressed with the way things are being handled..

Maybe it is risky... but really, i think that if you are going to worry about that, then you should worry about going anywhere.. Besides, we can`t let the bastards grind us down!

Thanks, that`s more or less what I`ve been thinking (more security around now than ever, relatively low risk, don`t let the barstewards dictate what we do etc, etc), it`s my missus who`s the worrier, so she`ll have three days of watching News24!
And talking of 911, I was tempted to go to New York just after that because of the heightened security and, of course, the low prices!
BTW, where abouts on Hampstead Heath is the big chair? (not a target, surely).

Spare a thought for us poor sods, who live and work here on the outskirts of London.

We now have to watch now, we dont wear conspicus clothing, like a wet suit in Belgravia or a fur coat down the Strand :D

Also we have to stay out the sun, in case a good tan will cast us as a suspect.
And we dare not run anywere in case we`re mowed down with the `shoot to overkill ` policy.

Its the crazy world we now live in :/

Indeed, every day for me too. What can you do? You can`t worry about these things, you must live your life.

There was a big sponsored walk for the BIG ISSUE on Sunday, they catered for thousands of expected participants, in the end only 14 turned up. Your not on your own in feeling nervous about the visiting London so don`t feel embarassed or pressured into doing anything you don`t want to, but it does look like the bombers are taking their toll.
