need advice for website developer job interview

hi

Ive got a job interview for a website developer next week and I need some advice. Im keen to show them my dissertation as it was a web based teaching tool developed using PHP and MySQL but im not really sure how I should go about doing this. Do I assume there will be a computer in the interview room where I can show my online system working? Or shall I bring evidence of my coding to the interview via disc or printout? Im really not sure.

This is my first interview since graduating so Im new to it all!

Im also pretty sure theyre going to ask me what I expect to earn. Again Im not sure how I should answer this. Do I be cheeky and ask for loads? Or risk being paid less by expecting less?

Any advice would be greatly aprreciated

Hi Lizard,
When`s the interview? Have you got a laptop or could you beg/borrow or steal one - well not steal obviously. If it`s just PHP and MySQL you wouldn`t need a high spec machine. You could always ring them and ask for a computer to be setup - this would show them you`re capable of planning and forward thinking.
I`m a freelance analyst programmer but I`m guessing this is a permanent placement? With freelance/contract work it`s typical to get some kind of test (written most of the time), but with permie positions they normally ask you a couple of techie questions to make sure you`re on the ball.
As for money, they`ll know what they will pay for someone of a particular age and experience and there are a lot of coders out there so they probably wont entertain a request for an extortionate amount but there`s nothing wrong with asking for the top amount - normally there`s a bit of bargaining that goes on anyway.
Have a look on Jobserve or Jobsite and see what sort of money is being offered for similar jobs.
Remember to relax and try to enjoy it - they`re looking for someone that can do the job and get on with the rest of the team, if your website is good then that`s half the battle. Remember to ask a least one question when they give you the opportunity, you could ask them what they enjoy about working for the company, where you`d be expected to start, what projects they have going at the moment and long term prospects. This last one will show that you`re not a flybynight even if you turn out to be one (like most of us) :)
Anyway good luck and let us know how you get on. If you have anymore questions - let me know and I`ll do my best to answer them.

Cheers
Dave

Im getting nervous already but hopefully itll go well. Thanks again for the help and I shall let you know how I get on. Cheers
