Any Herptologists out there?

**roofie** (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 6th September 2005, 18:56

I`m new here so I thought I`d better start a thread.

I am relatively new to the hobby. I got my first snake just under two years ago. I`ve dabbled with s corn, s milk and a ball python but have now settled with two king snakes and an adult terrapin which I `adopted` after it was dumped at my local aquatics.

I thought this was something to do with people with a fondness for Herpes!

Seriously though, my dad has had 3 royal pythons in the past. The first one was called Monty (I know, original), the other two were bought at the same time in order to mate and were called Harry and Sally. Of course, they both turned out to be the same sex. ;)

We also had a water dragon, but returned it after a while due to it being unhappy. :(

My dad has now returned back to owning a Parrot, and has an african grey called Captain, who is singing the Spider-man theme tune at this very moment. :D

I`ve got a two year old female Cali King - black with a long white stripe running down her back though she is changing colour now. The black is turning brown and the white is turning a banana colour. She is nearly 4` long now.

I`ve also got a baby Mexican Black. She is approx 6 months old and will not grow as big.

A lot of fellas seem surprised because snake-keeping is often thought of as a `male` hobby.

Hi Roofie

We`ve got a Mexican Black King cross currently at 5`4" - our local reptile shop owner reckons he will probably get up to around 6` when fully grown.

Matt66 (I think that`s his name) is also a keen herpetologist. However, Bowfer`s not and I feel sure that he will be along soon telling us how chav like we all are ;)

Cheers

5` 4"? Wow. I was told that my female black would reach 90cm if I was lucky.

My Cali is slowing down now so i don`t thyink she`ll go much past 4` 6".

Is NOT a chav - is an accountant! 8)

Been to see a lot of snakes today(Cotswold Wildlife Park, Burford) and I must admit they don`t look that cuddly to me but happily its a free country so enjoy yer herping I say.

I want a red panda though :) they look cuter and would probably watch tv with me.

My little baby black is gorgeous.

It wasn`t my fault I got her you know. I went to see my mate who is the manager of the local aquatics. I asked what a black looked like, and instead of just showing me, he left me holding her while he went off to serve a customer. How could I NOT fall in love with her, I ask you?

SNAKES.........I absolutely love them. I think they are one of the most beautiful creatures in the world, and so badly misunderstood. I would love to have one, but the Mrs is terrified. How about posting some pics of your snakes.

I held a constrictor once and it started tightening round my neck. The owner told me to relax and the snake would also. I relaxed and so did it. Lovely to touch and not slimy as most folks think.

My black won`t photograph at the moment because she just looks like a black blob but I`ll dig out some recent pics of my Cali. Back in a sec.

Although this is NOT my snake, it is very similar to the baby black:
