Stomach Ulcer

Batavia (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 7th September 2005, 14:10

Anyone else got one?
Drives me crazy and have been waiting on a hospital appointment for nine months now.
I take two Ranitidine (sp) tabs a day and they do b****r all. Have been on ones that begin with an "O". They did b****r all.
I avoid spicy foods, salad creams, the lot. I have tried licorice. I tried grapefruit seeds. Still got it.
Any advice? Dietary advice? Herbs?
PS. I also smoke 20 Silk Cut a day. Yes, I know. Stop.

Try a glass of hot milk with a little drop pepper in it. See if it works.

A stomach ulcer is a wound on the lining of your stomach where it fails to heal because of constant attack by the natural acids in your digestive system. Ranitidine (formerly Zantac) reduces the amount of acid your stomach secretes, but you have to be careful about things that make you produce acid.

You must not start taking non-prescription medication like bicarb to counteract the acid as you will do more damage than good. Only take indigestion cures if your doctor says they might be a good idea.

You can help your system by avoiding stress (which encourages acidosis), excessive intake of alcohol, try drinking more milk (as it puts a protective lining on your stomach and the calcium is good for you). You know those yoghurt drinks like Yakult and Actimel? Have one of them with your breakfast, they`re great for stomach disorders.

You want me to possibly make your day, or even year?

Ok, I`ll try but in the end you have to hope this is the (or part of) the cause.

Contrary to popular belief ulcers are not always caused by stress but once you have one stress can increase the symptoms as can smoking etc.
You know all that though because it hurts like hell, right?

Anyway, a few years ago I had one, it was giving me nothing but pain for 2 years or so, sometimes I could go a few months with a break but it always came back.

One day I caught an article in a womans mag (hey the wife reads em and I`m so glad I read it that day)
The article was on Stomach Ulcers and how stress is not the cause in a lot of cases but a little known (then) bacteria called Helicobacta pylori (that spelling is probably incorrect) and that *if* you have this bacteria present it`s the cause of the ulcer and it can then be cured without surgery.

I was on the phone like a shot to my quack for an appointment, I tell him this and the git says that bacteria is in no way prevalent in this country and I`m basically wasting his time, I went another year of pain because of that >:(

I then mentioned it again to another doc at the surgery and he said he would give me a blood test (I had to push for it) and guess what? Yup, it came back positive.

He gave me the prescription which consists of very strong anti-biotics and some sort of acid killing drug, this course lasts 2 weeks.

Anyway, I`m rambling but push for this test.
A lot of people still are not aware of this bacteria (write it down) I`m now years free of my Ulcer and over the moon about that I can tell ya :D

I still want to kick that other `doctor` up the arse though, he made me go through another years pain because he`s the so called expert.

Hope this helps you.

Axel

Helicobacta pylori

You just jolted my memory on that. Of course, I remember reading about this a few years ago. The new "theory" found by a man in Perth, Australia. And it works.
Thanks for reminding me. Booking a doc`s appointment tomorrow and going to take this route.
