advice need for beginner on region 1 dvds

Hi,

I have looked around for fair while looking for this info but my questions could not be answered fully. I would be very appreciate if one person kind enough could simply answer my questions.

Just wondered in general what the differences were between region 1 dvds from the usa and region 1 dvds from canada

Is it that the canada ones have french writing on the packaging?

Is this the case with all canadian region 1 dvds or just some?

If it is just on some canadian region 1 dvds how do you know which ones?

Are there any other differences usually?

Many thanks

check out the cover art on the site you are buying from, other than that, if you want to avoid Canadian discs only order from Amazon USA ***
I have found that with the likes of play.com or loaded247.com , most of their R1 stock is Canadian. The reason being import taxes etc..

Are there any other differences usually?

mostly a french language track. This can oust a special feature or two. Sometimes DTS is dropped. Sometime though Canada does have DVD`s that are unique and highly collectible. I strongly suggest you use Rewind a brilliant DVD comparison site before any DVD purchase.

*** If you do use Amazon USA make sure each order comes below $29 inc. P&P . (£18 ) That way you`ll avoid Royal Mail charges.

Lifted from somewhere I just Googled:
Quote:

As of March 1st 2002, to comply with Canadian law, studios must release some of their DVDs with a French cover.
To comply, they have released different products than those available in the United States.
As it stands, the types of covers that are available from major studios are:
Method 1: 2 distinct products, one with an English cover and one with a French cover. In this case, we mark the french cover version with a (v.f) suffix. All other methods have no (v.f) suffix as there is only one product.
Method 2: 1 product with a reversible bilingual cover (one side predominently French and one side predominently English, but both sides bilingual)
Method 3: 1 product with a non reversible bilingual cover (predominently English but bilingual)
Method 4: 1 product with a reversible cover (one side completely French and one side completely English expect for a small tag stating that the reverse cover is in French)
The major studios have adopted the following methods as of March 1st 2002:

Columbia, Warner, Seville, Fox and Disney use method 1
Universal use method 2 (back to the future)
Paramount use method 3
Fox use option 4

The vf is the main clue (version francais), if that does not appear in the description you can be fairly sure its a straight R1, when ordering from a Canadian company.

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.
