Harry Potter Question

jeffthegun (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 30th March 2006, 08:56

Can someone please explain why everyone is so s*** scared of Voldermort? As someone who has only watched the films, he actually seems like a bit of a pussy. He is half magic person/half mugwump and cant even beat harry potter in a good old fashioned shoot out.

I watched the GOF yesterday and he just seemed like most of the other wizards would be able to at least go toe to toe with him. Plus his character was made less intimidating by the fact that they gave us the chance to make the `Voldermorts got no nose! How does he smell?` joke. He also seemed soft in the one before.

Like when the magical KKK razed the world cup to the ground. There were like 8 of them and like a million other people. Surely someone could have turned them into a frog or something?

As far as I could tell their best trick was making that strangley homo-erotic sky picture and shooting off little fireballs.

It just seems like there are quite a few reasonably manly good wizards, who seem fairly adept at kicking a bit of arse when required, so its hard to see why everyone is bricking it so badly. It kind of devalues the story for me. There needs to be a training montage sequence in the next one that explains how he went from a nancyboy to the vader of the potter world.

I couldn`t understand why Voldermort couldn`t just killed potter instead of just doing the usual long winded talk that baddies do, just kill him, Harry`s trapped he can`t escape, SHUT THE F*** UP AND KILL HIM!!!

No way dude - he looks well scary. A bit of a rip off of `Skeletor` in the MOTU film I reckon!

Its because he uses the unforgivable curses and good people dont do that, he has no problem with killing pretty much anyone and puts people under the imperious curse, which makes them do what he wants no matter what he wants to do, and he doesnt just kill you if you upset him, him and the deatheaters will kill you and your whole family if you get in his way.

The good guys didnt attack the death eaters at the Quidditch world cup, coz if they had attacked the death eaters, then the people might have fallen and could have ended p badly hurt, and to not care about that would have made them just as bad as the death eaters, so they had to wait til they found a spell which could let the people down slowly and get them safely out of the way.

Voldemort didnt kill harry when he was tied to the tombstone because that would have made him look afraid of harry...bear in mind he went from being the greatest dark wizard ever to being a complete wreck when he tried to kill harry the first time, and then couldnt even touch him when he tried to come back at first. So he had to duel with harry instead of just kill him to prove himself.

Also, as you`ll find out in the last book:
SPOILER:
Voldemort is not just a big bad dude, only harry that can kill him...and even thats gonna be hard coz he`s nearly immortal.

i think that if you were jk rowling and not nickthegun you to would not let him kill harry so soon cuz of the more books to sell more films to make and make money off etc, why kill off a good money making machine, :)

Dont the Aurors (sp?) use them too, though?

I didnt expect him to kill him, just batter him to within an inch of his life and then harry makes a miraculous escape or something. Instead they crossed the streams or something equally as lame and Harry was saved (in a vague way) by some ghosts.
I dunno......I expected him to be rocking the s*** in this one, but it turned out hes a bit of a Streisand.........

Let me get this straight.

You expected an adult villain to batter a child hero to within an inch of his life in a PG-13 movie, based on a book for kids...

...and you (a grown man) don`t see why you don`t find the villain in a kid`s movie scary...

...and you are pointing out plot holes in movie based on a book about a kid who goes to wizard school.

Is that about right?

I was disapointed by the latest film-without reading the book you hardly know what`s going on-now that`s unforgivable!!

Yeah, thats about it. And 12 certificates can be pretty violent. Green Goblin gave Spider-Man a right drubbing.

I didnt say I didnt find him scary (which I dont, but thats by the by), I said I didnt find him or understnad exactly why or how he`s so powerful, which undermines the whole plot. For me, at least anyway.

I wasnt pointing out plot holes....more of a lack of plot in some areas.

No. 1 out of 3. Must try harder.

At the risk of getting into a pointless debate (what risk i hear you say?), i think the key here (as i alluded to) is that the green goblin beating up on spiderman is different to an adult battering a kid

For the second point, you say that you don`t undertand why everyone is so scared of Voldemort. Would this "everyone" be kids? Or do you know adults who find Voldemort scary. In which case you have bigger problems than figuring out Harry Potter`s complex and multidimensional characters.

Finally, i think you`re nitpicking a little bit on the third point. You are saying things like, "why couldn`t the hobgoblins perform a spell on voldemort causing etc....".

You say "lack of plot"....everyone else in the world says "plot hole".

So that`s

0 out of 3. Doesn`t take direction well.
