POLL: Should muslim women remove thier veils
What do you reckon?

RE: POLL: Should muslim women remove thier veils
I know its a religious thing but I feel that it only empowers men to wear a veil.
now men wearing veils...there are quite a few candidates for that.
RE: POLL: Should muslim women remove thier veils
Jack straw said something like the following (in the radio clip i heard this morning)
" I ask that they remove their vails but i do not demand it. I respect their beliefs but I have a belief that discussions, where not conducted on a phone or via e-mail, but face to face should indeed be that."
He has not said to speak to him they must remove the vail - is there really that much of an issue in asking someone if they would do something but accepting if they refuse on religious grounds.
I;d rather be able to see all of someone`s face if speaking face to face with them rather than just the eyes
RE: POLL: Should muslim women remove thier veils
I have to admit, I`ve never really thought about it as I`ve never met many identity-skewed muslim women. I might give it a thought if I did bump into one down a dark alleyway and she scared the s*** out of me, though.
Why any 21st century woman would want to put up with essentially wearing a mask in public because some long dead old geezer decreed it many moons ago is beyond me.
But that`s religion for you.

Fowler, would you ask a woman to remove any other part of her clothing?

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

RE: POLL: Should muslim women remove thier veils
Well I didnt actually say i;d ask a muslim lady to remove it personally.
And even if I did say that I would - I wouldnt need to ask to remove any other piece of clothing I only talk to people`s faces
On the flip side - if they have the right to keep a vail on if they chose shoudl someone not have the right to ask them to lift it when having what would be essentially a private conversation??
As i said he asked it off them he DID NOT demand it. In the interview clip played this morning he as good as said that if they didnt want to he respected their beliefs and that was the end of it.
Get off his back - and BTW i dont even like the guy but he has rights to

RE: POLL: Should muslim women remove thier veils
I`m a total religion idiot..
why do they wear them anyway?> they can`t all be boilers.
RE: POLL: Should muslim women remove thier veils
I don`t think it`s a matter of trusting them or not - there`s no reason for Jack Straw (who I can`t stand) or anyone else not to trust these women.
But we`re human beings and we communicate using more than just our voices when in face-to-face conversation and intentionally obscuring your facial expression is contrary to what is natural to vital everyday, innocent, behaviour in *any* culture.
It`s human to smile at a stranger and be able to see them smile back. :)
None of my friends at school (post-pubescent) wore a veil, the most covered-up was a recently-arrivied Somali girl who wore a sort of all-in-one cape over her clothing with just her face and hands showing (this would have been 1995 or so). None of the older sisters or mum wore a veil, just hijab either pinned or more loose. I never saw a woman with a veil or even the hijab actually pinned in a way that it was over the face until about 3 years ago. It seems to have been adopted into "convention" amongst English Muslims only within the past five or six years - and it`s still a very tiny minority who do so.
Jack Straw is a Jewish pro-war Labour politician like Oona King was, I think this might be the gunshot in a convoluted overdose+hanging+shooting political suicide for his seat. :D I won`t be sad to see him go - but not for this.

As far as I no it is so they can not be temptations for men. When my sister goes out she covers her hair and wears long skirts and sleaves. She does not to the full on cover up.
