this week`s channel 5`s greatest ever films annoyance

whoot (Elite) posted this on Monday, 30th October 2006, 13:56

This week we had scary movies. Fine. But whats that at number 14? Clockwork Orange? Scarier than Nightmare on Elm Street? Scary at all? err... shurely shome mishtake..
and is 28 days later scarier than the Omen? or the Ring? No, its not.
Taxi driver at number 36.. and cape fear.. Er... these are psychological thrillers.. if we are doing them, where is audition? where is Peeping Tom?
My bank statements create more fingernail chewing situations than most of those films.

Who comes up with the list? People who have only seen twenty five films anyway, and just list them?

Finally.. CREEP is an unmitigated piece of s***. It shouldn`t make any "best" list..

that is all.

"Alien" was number one.
In no particular order:
Psycho
Alien
Deep Blue Sea
The Serpent and the Rainbow
The Birds
Poltergeist
The Shining
Halloween
Jaws
Apocalypse Now (probably the scariest movie I have seen)

I didn`t see the programme in question, but it sounds like many of the films listed shouldn`t be there. The beauty of horror is that many films contain horror elements and whilst they may not be pure horror, there is an aspect of that film that is `horrific` such as `The Ludovico Treatment` in `A Clockwork Orange`.

As for my top ten, see the link in my sig!

if you judge horror by those standards, you are making it a very wide playing field. Are you saying that that scene is that scary? Is it really one of the top twenty five nasty things you have ever seen?

If they are judging it by "ooh, well that was pretty nasty.. " i would put irreversible at number 1. but that ain`t no facking horror film.

I think it was "scary" rather than "horror" - which made for an interesting mix as we all have different ideas of what IS scary.

Generally, they are one in the same, though, but yeah, there are different kinds of scary. Like when the woman gets absorbed into the computer in Superman III. That scared the crap out of me more than any of the 18`s my dad used to let us watch as kids.

Serpent and the Rainbow is layme (note the extra Y for added emphasis). I actually thought it was pretty badass until I saw it a few years ago.

Anyway, fwiw my top five scary movies are (based on the first time I watched them).........

The Excorcist (no way in hell, literally, is Alien scarier than this)
Hellraiser
Jaws
Dawn of the Dead
Event Horizon (yes, i know.......)
