Sacha Baron Cohen - not laughing much now
I really don`t care for him, and I think 90% of his work is cringeworthy to watch (talladega nights was ok)
Now it seems his exploitation of `innocent bystanders` (in the loosest sense) for The Borat Movie is catching up with him. First the 2 college freshmen are sueing him and the production company for mental anguish, after they got them drunk and filmed them at their worst. They`re sueing because they were assured that the film wouldn`t be shown in america, where it got to the top spot.
Now, he`s being sued by an entire village
Quote:
British (cough) funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen has been threatened with legal action by the Romanian village which stood in for his comic creation Borat`s native Kazakhstan in his hit movie. Gypsy citizens of Glod are outraged that Cohen ridiculed their lifestyle in Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan, which has topped international box offices, and paid them a pittance to allow farm animals into their homes. Local leader Nicolae Staicu will meet with a public ombudsman today to formulate legal action against Cohen and distributor 20th Century Fox. Staicu accused the producers of paying locals just $4 to perform degrading acts, misleading the village into thinking filming was for a documentary and refusing to sign proper filming contracts. Resident Dana Luca, 40, says, "We thought they came here to help us - not mock us. We haven`t got anything here. We haven`t got running water. We can`t even bathe. We are poor people, but we are still people."
Just further adds weight to my theory that he`s an attention-seeking prick

I sit somewhere between the two opinions here ... I think he`s funny too but I don`t feel comfortable about cultural p*** taking and the humiliation of individuals for entertainment and profit...whcih seems prevelant these days..... :/
RE: Sacha Baron Cohen - not laughing much now
To be honest, I bet he is still laughing. They would have probably have gotten everybody to sign release forms, as per any production, which clears the production company on matters like these.
It`s hardly a suprise that some Americans are suing, and I`m sure the studio behind it would have expected it too, considering the nature of the film. And lets face it, the studio could easily afford to pay anyone off without breaking a sweat anyway. Isn`t Borat going on to be the most successful comedy of all time?
I bet Sacha Baron Cohen is laughing his f***ing head off all the way to the bank, considering he`s earned millions off the back of it for future productions.
Oh, and I think he`s funny too. Interesting to have seen his rise since the 11 o`clock Show. And he should get an Oscar for staying in character for so long, for all his PR work for the Borat film. He seemed to be in character 24/7. Can you imagine any other actor doing a similar thing?
Giggity giggity!

"Borat" could wind up grossing $200 million to become the biggest comedy of all time.

I think they`re already lining him up to do a Bruno movie - the gay Austrian character.
"Fog on the moors - all`s well indoors. Fog in the `ouse - sun`s out for field mouse."
RE: Sacha Baron Cohen - not laughing much now
As far as I heard he had signed a £40 million + deal with the studio, so I think a Bruno movie will definitely be made.
Giggity giggity!
