Why R1 over R2?

psprog (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 14th November 2001, 15:05

Subject says it all really, I`m new to DVD and am wondering what all the fuss about R1 discs is. Aren`t they in NTSC which has 100 less lines of vertical resolution, therefore the R2 PAL discs are always going to have superior picture quality? Or am I missing something?!

R1= ntsc disks from north america
R2= Pal disks From Uk
they are both good quality dvds.

Main Statements about R1
1. Most dvds come out on region 1 way earlier than region 2.
2. In cases where R2 comes out earlier than R1, R1 is likely to have better extras
3. There are tons more discs available on region 1 that arent out on region 2 yet.
4. Region 1 stuff tends to be way cheaper than region 2 (look at the price diff for the simpsons boxset)
5. There are more special, ultimate and criterion editions of dvds with tons of more extras. Most Criterion Dvds are region 1. Many SE`s like dogma, hasnt been released in region 2.

Yes.....i agree with dicanio........R1 everytime. Also checkout some Region 4 titles....they are PAL.......you can also pick up some bargains from the Aussie sites..... with the exchange rate being quite favourable at the moment.

Interesting, the consensus seems to be that the lower quality picture is more than made up for by the extras and earlier release dates etc. I thought the whole point of DVD was "ultimate picture quality" - I think I`ll stick to R2 for now!

You`d be mistaken to think that NTSC discs are always worse quality than PAL. A lot of factors contribute towards picture quality, and vertical resolution is only one of them (a fairly minor one at that). Many R1 DVDs are visually more impressive than their R2 counterparts.

By the way, R1 discs aren`t the only alternative to R2 UK releases, R4 Australian stuff is worth considering too. Aussie discs are PAL and are usually quite a bit cheaper than the UK equivalents.

Ditto with dicanio on both counts. And anyway, weren`t we all content with video picture quality for nigh on twenty years. Even the worst dvd picture wipes the floor with video.
