Printing yer own passport photos...

alfie noakes (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 1st March 2007, 12:46

Is it acceptable to print your own passport pics on an inkjet printer onto decent photo paper in good quatlity? (supposedly non-fade inks too).

I know they say on passport forms that "photos printed at home are not likely to be of an acceptable quality".

Anyone tried this?

I have been having fun trying to do immigration pic`s for the kids, just worked out the sizes to print on a "photo-me" printer in a shopping arcade as the print actual size differs from my colour laser.

Then the PC blew up & I can`t get the option back that shows me the actual photo dimensions while dragging the size change on the software I was using.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Todays goal is to exceed yesterdays record level of totally unverifable productivity.

I don`t understand why people knock ASBO`s, they are good things as for most of the recipients, these are the only qualifications they will ever have.

Hi Alfie - any modern inkjet is going to be capable of a quality sufficient for a passport photo so as long as you have a high-res jpeg that meets their requirements in terms of size, background etc you should be ok.

If you get a passport application pack there should be an illustrated guide to the do`s and don`t`s for photos - I found the biggest problem was getting the photo accepted by the post office - they put it into a grid and if your head is in any way outside the guidelines they reject it.

When I did this last year I just pasted the image into a word file and used the on-screen ruler marks to resize it to somewher near the correct size then did a test print and made adjustments.

Got my new passport about 10 days after posting the application.

Yeah cheers, got all the info about what`s acceptable - it just seemed to suggest that printing your own would not be allowed although quality and longevity should easily be as good as using photo booth pics.

I`ve got a printer that automatically produces passport sized photos, so the set up is a piece of weewee. Thanks.

Just make sure your not smiling on your photo!? The missus had hers rejected because she had the littlest of all smiles so had to fork out another £4 for another set. Judging by that you may have your home printed ones rejected...what with the magic of PhotoShop etc...!!

I`ve got the detailed guidelines about what`s acceptable and what isn`t. That`s the beauty of doing the pics yerself - you can always just re-shoot them.

BTW, it`s not actually for me - it`s for me mum. I also used to be a commercial photographer, so I can generally remember not to stick me thumb over the lens, etc. :D

Some photo processing will do guaranteed passport standard photos and only charge the same as those photo-booths. They just re-shoot the pcitures until their software say they are OK. We use these and mine, OH or two kids went through fine
