Did anybody see that postie on the news today claiming that £21k wasn`t a "liveable wage"?
It got me yelling at the screen straight away - I saw this at lunchtime and I`m still annoyed now. I don`t dispute that they should maybe earn more, but there are millions of people across the country who live on much less and do jobs that are much more important (IMHO).
Just wondered if my sights are set too low, as I`d consider that to be a decent salary, really*. What do you lot think?
*Of course, I`d be happier still with more than that - but you get what I mean.
depends what you do..being able to read and carry a bag is a highly skilled job..
i dont get paid much more than that to be honest.. and i think that that is s***
*claps...

I heard a postie on the radio saying he thought it unfair that he and his mates were asked to do work to fill up their hours if they finished a round early, in his case 2 hours early. He seemed to be saying he should get paid for 2 hours a day even if he was not doing anything and should not be expected to do anything else once he had done his deliveries.
That seems a silly argument and not one that would endear the postal service to anyone who cannot slope off home 2 hours early because they are `finished`.

Hey it doesn`t mention that you need maths so I reckon you go for the job as postie ;)

I have an ugly feeling that we`re watching the death throes of Royal Mail. It`s at the end of a long illness that dates back to 1971, when an earlier suicide attempt failed.
Whether or not the Posties have a valid claim for a higher wage settlement than has been offered I`m not commenting on. All I know is if they go on strike they`ll only succeed in putting themselves out of work and the UK postal system into the hands of the Germans.

I said it before and I`ll say it again.
I didn`t want to go to Californy.
I think the postal service is suffering also. The postmen should cope though coz they`re used to getting the sack! :D
I`ll get my coat!!

Having been a postie for nearly 18 years i have seen a lot of change in this time. The postie who says he can`t live on £21k must work in London as they get paid more than the rest of the country.
The problem with the current situation is not just about pay, it`s about the "strings" attached to it.
When we last had a major overhaul of the company about 3-4 years ago our leader Alan Leighton said "if you agree to 1 delivery a day instead of 2, work a 5 day week then you have JOB AND FINISH". This means as soon as you finish walking the streets, even if it is 2 hours early, you can go home. They now want to change this and loads of other conditions which will have major downsides to working for Royal Mail.
In fairness to some people who do finish early, this is sometimes because they start before there official time and so make up the hours before they are OFFICIALLY contracted too.
Strike action is the last resort, the ballot was more about getting RM to see that enough is enough.
Where i work in Leicester, we have had 6 full time duties taken away in the form of savings, and now there is not enough staff to deliver the mail and for the last few months Managers are expected to go out and deliver mail at no cost to the business, even if it means going over there finish time. All because the person in charge has put a hold on recruitment for the last 12 months.
We don`t want to go on strike but it is about time RM put it`s workers first instead of paying people like Crozier £15,164 a week.

Arn`t accountants great. :D
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

21k ! Lucky bastards. I get £2,496 a year for being a carer for my 91 year old mother. I have no choice in the matter as no one else will look after her so I cant look for work.
