Doing London on the cheap is an interesting concept, especially if you going to shops!

A cheap day out in London, gf and I enjoyed was;

make packed lunch
me driving, parking zone 3 or 4, on the road somewhere so you can avoid car park, (if you find an NCP in suburbs for whole day it`s no more than other places),
tube to South Kensington
go in Natural history museum (it`s free)
tube back out,
drive home

You can easily spend a day in natural History Museum, or some of the other museums near it.

like most places, it`s the eating and drinking out which make it expensive

walking in Kensington Park and look at the shops, few places to eat for a few pounds, check out Harrods great store to see whats the latest,I did once have coffee there n bought some bread at their awesome bakery. But I am poor didn`t buy clothes there, cheaper here in America for clothes.Did the museums thing there , didn`t get to go to the Big Wheel heard thats a nice ride. Well maybe I will get to go to London again maybe. :¦

Changing the guard at Buck house (free) then take your pack lunch into St James Park and feed the crusts to the ducks (free). Then you can walk out the other end of the park to Horseguards and see if you can get one of the sentries to blink.
If your doing the museum bit make sure you take in the Science museum (loads of buttons to push) then just walk up to the Serpentine and feed the ducks there instead (less variety but just as greedy). Maybe splash out a couple of quid and rent a row boat on there as well.

If you can spend some dosh (not sure how much these days) then rather than the London Eye go to Westminster pier on the opposite bank and take a ride up and down the Thames to see London from the river.
If it`s a weekday around 5.00pm get yourself a take out cup of tea or coffee by either end of Waterloo bridge or London Bridge and laugh at all the Lemmings streaming across on the way home from a days graft.

Some days it`s just not worth gnawing through the leather straps.
