Page 1 of early 90`s cavalier - hazard warning light problem

Can`t get the bloody thing to turn off. Apparently it`s a common fault in these cars (my boss had one and the same thing happened) I can easliy get a replacement switch from a local breakers, but i can`t seem to be able to get the old one out. Does it slide out (after removing the switch cover) or do I have to remove the whole air vent?

Bit specific, I know, but you guys normally prevail..

My 1994 Cavalier used to do this (before it died). It was really annoying, esspecially when I put my hazards on when the traffic came to a sudden stop on the motorway to let others know behind me.

I used to pinch the released button with my thumb & index finger quite tightly & pull it outwards. You will feel a click which will allow you to push the button back in.

I`m not sure how to get the button out for replacement, I think I chucked my Haines manual out. I`ll have a dig to see if I can find it.

I had the same (or similar with same result) problem on my old Cav. I had it listed as a failure during one of its MOTs.
What seemed to work for me was this (similar to Hodgeys solution above):
The problem seemed to be caused by the button (switch cover) itself, sticking in the dash. If I pushed the button in and then let it go suddenly (try sliding finger off to one side of the button, not pushing in and then pulling your finger back - I hope that makes sense :/ ). IIRC, with the button "out", you should be able to grab hold of the button and pull it out of the dash, off of the switch itself.
I then sanded down the sides of the button and refitted it to the dash and never had the problem again :)

I had the same problem too. My local Vauxhall dealer swapped the actual switch for the one used in the Nova, and I never had the problem again.
It`s not a perfect fit, and it looked a bit odd, but it solved the problem.

We had a problem* with our Cav Hazard & despite me popping out the centre mounted between the vents switch & replacing it, I think IIRC I had to swap out the indicator stalk as well, but that may have been a seperate problem . :/

No problem since a total of 11.5 years of ownership & passed its MOT yesterday so its good for yet another (& finally one more) year.

Got it working, but apparently wedging a small piece of paper in the side to hold the button isn`t enough to warrant an MOT pass, so it`s getting replaced when they weld the undercarriage tomorrow, and replace the brake pads on the front wheel.

A bargain at £250 - not arf...
