DHSS Question about sick pay any help please?
Hi, I`m self employed and had a spell of illness lately that put me out of work for 2 weeks, 1 week of it in hospital.
I only pay the class 4 (I think it`s that) national insurance of £2.20 a week and know I can claim that back but not gonna bother for the small amount, but am I able to claim sick pay from the DHSS for these 2 weeks? Presumably I`d need a doctors note but is there anything else? And would it just be approx £40 a week?
Thanks guys

SSP is £14.51 per day after the first 3 days. Thats if ya PAYE not sure about self employed peeps. I always though self employed peeps had to pay there own sick pay.
I think SSP is payed by the company not the DHSS. Not 100% though.

Companies that have p**sed me off so much that I will never use them again and I hope you dont either....
Jacks Fish & Chips of Cambridge ridiculously overpriced and overpackaged chips. £1.20 for a stupidly small portion of chips - they need to go up north for a good lesson in fish and chips
Alloy Bodies of Manchester - The Grand Daddy & Benchmark for shockingly poor customer service.
Capital Bank Leasing who are part of [B]BOS & are f**ing useless & struggle to action the smallest request but are fantastically efficient at taking money out of my account
[B]Abbey National Absolutely diabolical service - how hard is it to change £60 of coins into notes????
....more coming soon no doubt.....

Yup Fowler and Neliboys are right. The £2.20 your paying is Class 2.
Assuming you just have one self employment and is fairly straightforward etc. you will then pay 8% Class 4 National Insurance on your profits above £5,225 for the current tax year.
You can`t get Statutory Sick Pay if your self employed but I "think" when your self employed you get incapacity benefit instead, but unsure if you could for two weeks? Worth having a look into that.
On a side note that`s a bit of a joke:
Class 4 National Insurance contributions don`t count towards your state pension entitlement.
We had a client who was self employed, but then incorporated in October a few years back. So obviously he stopped paying his Class 2 contributions of £2.10 per week (or whatever the rate was back then).
Then last year he`s had a notice from the Department of Work and Pensions that he will have a shortfall in the number of "qualifying years" as the year in which he finished he did not make contributions for the full year so it did not count as a "qualifying year".
Now we argued that during that tax year he paid around £2000 in Class 4 National Insurance because he had the profits of his business up to cessation in October which were assessed, but they don`t count towards the state pension.
So because he never paid Class 2 contributions for 6months which would amount to about to about £50, it wouldn`t count, although a tax payer who only paid the Class 2 for the whole year and no Class 4 (so £109.20), would be more entitled to the full state pension.
Although it`s less relevent now as it`s either gone through or is going through that the number of "qualifying years" you needed to get a full state pension is down to around 28years, or something like that, from around 44years (provided you retiring after December 2011 I think, but again, don`t hold me to it).

You may be entitled to Incapacity Benefit .....but you wont get anything for the first three days of sickness (waiting days).
