Should I hack my PSP firmware?

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 20th December 2007, 12:40

Okay, I bought one of those R4 cards for the DS recently and it works a treat. Now I`m curious to see if I can get the same result on the PSP.
Having looked into it it seems like the only way to do it is to hack the firmware and put on a custom one. Is it worth the effort? And how successful will the end result be?

What kind of benefits are there? And is there an easy way to do it? Mine was bought with in the first 12 months of the first generation (ie well out of warranty)

You can use "homebrew" software (ie stuff that clever non-Sony techies have developed for the PSP)...and if you`re so inclined you could run your games off the memory stick rather than the UMD`s. Obviously you would only play games that you have bought and backed up - since playing from the mem stick tends to save a lot of battery life ;)

Depends on what firmware you`re currently on as to the methods available to you.
But check out www.psphacks.net & pspupdates.qj.net.

This site is a fairly good starting point:

Just do a search for R4 Revolution card. Clever little thing that allows you to play games that have been saved to a micro SD card. Of course I only use it to play games that I have purchased and simply backed up on the memory card :D
The games are only about 30MB so you can get quite a few on a 1GB card. You can also put music on there too.

How much did you pay for your card?

A quick search on ebay and I could only find one for £65 - is that about right?

Going rate for an R4DS is around £20 to £25.

This new card costs $24.95 (c. £12.50) from dealextreme. DX are reliable supplier, shipping normally takes 10 to 15 days.

My girls have the M3DS which is basically the same as the R4DS, but if I needed another card I would go for the TopToy, which has a slightly more advanced O/S.
