This free range chicken thing...

Miles (Elite Donator) posted this on Wednesday, 9th January 2008, 22:09

Has anyone else been watching the Channel 4 show over the last 3 nights about free range vs battery chickens?

Interested to hear people`s views on this topic. I don`t eat that much meat anyway (not a vegetarian, just prefer fish to anything else), but when I do, I like to buy free range & organic stuff. I`m lucky enough that I earn well and can afford not to have to think about the cost too much.

Anyway, anyone hold an opinion on this?

I think its down to pure cost, I always buy free range eggs as they do taste so much better, but if you slow cook the oldest chicken with seasoning it still tastes yum

f*ck it.

I`m going free range - i think the standards are apalling for `farm fresh` chickens.....

As am aside i dont understand what that f*ckwit Jamie Oliver was doing endorsing thm when Sainsburys are probably the 2nd biggest customers of intensely bred chickens......doofus.

Always buy free range eggs, never barn or battery. Wish there was a better choice of chickens as I`d buy free range without a second`s hesitation if they were more widely available (and not premium priced).

Goes for any animals for that matter - ethical treatment from egg to plate.

Always buy free range eggs but, strangely, never bother with free range chicken.
Dunno why that inconsistency is there, but there you go.
I dare say I`d have a problem finding a free-range only Indian/Chinese takeaway as well.
Would I go out of my way, or pay a premium, if one was to open?
Doubt it, TBH.
Too much trust involved, in that the owner may a bloody liar and laughing his head off.
I simply cannot see a day when battery farming dies purely due to customer pressure, because commerce will still buy it (restaurants/takeaways).
It would have to be outlawed, which I`d be in favour of.

I did, the pig episode anyway.
Again, I hold my hands up.
I`m one of those that finds the way it`s done pretty distasteful, but I`ll happily tuck into a cripsy bacon sarnie.
Those suckling pigs they chose seemed to be reared very well though.

I always buy free range eggs and organic, free range chicken. I try and buy that RSPCA inspected stuff where I can get it.

Same goes for all meat really.

I used to live on a farm that wasnt intensive, so I know how meat should be raised and how it should taste. Even when I was skint, I would rather not eat cheap meat, knowing how it had been raised and all the s*** they pump into it.
