Weird Carphone Warehouse Scam

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 21st October 2008, 17:12

About 3pm this afternoon I had a phone call from someone at Carphone Warehouse trying to flog me insurance for the phone I recently got from them. I politely told them I was insured elsewhere and said goodbye.
At 4.15 I then received another phonecall from an arrogant pr1ck stating that he was calling re the phone I bought from CW. (notice he didn`t say he was FROM CW). I was quite abrupt here but not rude and stated that I had already received a call earlier and had insured elsewhere.
To which he replied "where is your current insurance?"
which I then told him "you don`t need to know where i am currently insured, all you need to know is that I have insurance"
His response then being "well there you go then, f**k off" and he put the phone down.

I drove home planning to write to CW and demand to know who they have passed my details onto but then received another call at 5pm from yet another CW person claiming to be a supervisor. I was about to unleash hell on him for his staff when he asked if I too had received calls from a company trying to sell me insurance and advised that I gave them no details whatsoever as they had received numerous complaints and were now calling customers and following it up with letters.
Not sure what to believe now to be honest but glad I didn`t give any of them any of my details. Thought I would give everyone else the heads up in case there is a scam going on.

Well done for being on your guard. This is why I always check that little box about not allowing companies to pass on your details

They have been at it a while. I had exactly the same thing happen when I got my phone last year. I ordered it on the O2 website and got a phone call a few days later trying to sell me insurance for the phone I had bought in the shop. Pretty much the same response from him too when I told them I hadnt bought it in a shop and wasn`t interested anyway.

A few years ago I also had someone phone em up claiming I was entitled to an upgrade and he just needed to confirm my name , address and national insurance number. When I queried that, he said "Its just your NI number, I dont know what you think someone could do with it" My repsonse was along the lines of "quite a lot, but you can f*** off without it." :-D

Ah yes, the joys of number withheld >:(

What is the point of that, other than to assist scammers??

A couple of mates who jumped on the iPhone bandwagon recently had similar things with endless calls from companies trying to sell them insurance.

It seems some of them monitor the available numbers and then when one gets allocated to someone they ring them up and try and flog them insurance.

Grrr!

>:( My eldest daughter got conned by these s***bags a while back, she bought a phone from phones 4u (thats another story..) and within a few days had some arrogant pushy jerk on the phone to her saying he was from phones4 u and was calling about her "free" phone insurance, he had enough details of the account to make it very plausible and as it was "free" she said ok, all they needed he said was the last few digits of her debit card, for security reasons which like an idiot she gave and by 3pm the same day thay had taken £75.00 from her account.

Top and tail of it all was i got on the phone and was greeted with what can only be described as "sucker..." from the person on the other end, 2 days later the details arrived in the post with a cancellation form which they honoured and the money was returned.

My guess is the insurance is probably quite legit, but the sales methods arent.... :B

Not a phone, but I had MBNA call me once as they had a query on my account. They asked for my password/number thing. It was at this point that I pointed out to them I could not give them the details as I did not and never had had an MBNA card. God knows what was going on there. I did contact MBNA to make sure no one had a card in my name. It looked like I was in the clear.

To add some clearance on this for you guys (i think)

I read in the paper today that some "crooks" have managed to hack into some system or other and managed to get details of people who have recently bought new phones (i actually think it may have specifically stated i-phones)

They were then calling these people offering them insurance and thus somehow managed to get bank details etc which enabled them to rip the unspecting peeps off for some of their hard earned cash
