RE: Dave`s Leicester Comedy Festival.

Show update:-

Alastair McGowan

Great show, very odd being in the cathedral. He`s a bit rusty, having been doing other work recently, but the first half was essentially a touring show with some new impressions, new routines etc. Very sports based, which is great for me, and there`s probably just about the right amount for a wider audience. Doing a David Mitchell impression early on also damages the voice a bit!

Second half was a Q & A session, which was great. Lots of good questions from the audience, and lots of great background and stories from Alastair. I asked if he would appear in Preston Front if the BBC brought it back, and he thinks not because of the different career trajectories of everyone involved.

Alan Davies

Full 2 hour touring show, right at the end of the tour. I was a little disappointed and was expecting more. Some good routines here, and a lot of personal material, as well as some good audience banter, but just missing something for me.

Henning Wehn

Until last night, this was the best show of the festival for me. First half was a general set with some familiar material if you`ve seen Henning before, and with the added bonus that he read out his answer for a forthcoming show of The Unbelievable Truth. Nice to see that "was invented by Jesus" is still in the opening sentence of every piece!

Second half was his Edinburgh 2012 show Henning Knows Bestest, more of the same from the first half, but newer material. Very funny, political points in here too and lots to laugh at. Brilliant.

Boothby Graffoe

The show of the festival, despite the poor support act (apologies to them, but they really struggled to go anywhere with an interesting central premise of "a lovely cup ot tea").

Boothby however was brilliant. A very talented guitarist, and prone to great flights of fancy as a stand up. Never afraid to ad lib and then stop if it`s going nowhere.

There`s always a trade off between wanting more brilliant songs, and more great comic ramblings. Whilst there was a smallish crowd, he did feed off this very well. And everyone loves a singalong to Baseball Playing Spider.

The Horne Section - looking forward to this tonight, having seen one of their shows in London just over a year ago.

RE: Tell us about your first DVD player / discs...

Sony DVP-S7700, and it`s still going strong 13 and a bit years on. It was scarily expensive, but has proved to be worth every penny!

First disc was Doctor Who : The Five Doctors

RE: Shut Down or Hibernate?

Ever since Hibernate has existed, I`ve hibernated any Windows machine I`ve owned. On a few rare occasions a machine may not come out cleanly, and it reboots. But that`s very rare.

Help identifying a sci-fi film please...

A relative has asked me for help, and I can`t think what this film is, so thought I`d throw it out there for everyone...

It was on TV a few years ago and the plot is a little something like this:-

It was about some people who had written a computer program that created a virtual world. They could go into the virtual world (and have a bit of fun). But it ended up that in fact they were actually in a virtual world themselves.

Anyone got any ideas?

RE: Why Would I Want An iPod???

Some form of MP3 player is the perfect portable media device for me.

I`ve had portable music since it was invented with the various Walkmans, through to a discman and currently a phone with MP3 player (an old Sony Ericsson number).

I use it going to and from work every day, when wandering around town, wandering around the supermarket, on train journeys and also in the shower (combined with a portable speaker like the X-Mini II). It`s used for music as well as podcasts (mostly comedy/entertainment type stuff).

I took the plunge of MP3-ifying my monstrous CD collection last year, spurred on my my new car CD player which wasn`t a multi-changer (for the first time in years) but instead played MP3 CDs. So I needed to make lots of these for the car and now have around 40Gb of digitial music...

RE: Doing up the gaff...

If you are a reasonably competent DIY-er you can fit the kitchen units yourself and then get someone in to fit the stone worktops. That`s exactly what we did a few years back.

The money you save on the installation can then be spent on nice bits of stone if that`s your thing. Once the units are in, someone comes round to template, makes MDF or similar templates, takes them away and then comes back with the equivalent bits of stone.

Do try to get everything as straight/square as possible, otherwise they have to scribe the stone to make it fit and this adds a little extra to the cost.

RE: Imperial War museum (London)

Some interesting things across the other side of the river including Tate Britain, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey.

On the same side of the river, Aquarium, London Eye, and further round Tate Modern and the Globe. It`s all walkable and pretty simple. The Google map shows it all quite nicely.

RE: Spam email - How do they do that?

Whilst it could be a spoof it sounds more like a hacked account.

There have been quite a few of these attacks recently - mostly accounts with weak passwords being hacked. A friend of ours had it done to them, an e-mail from their account came from somewhere in Queensland, even though they`ve never been there.

Time to change password to a stronger one if this is what`s happened.

RE: Leicester Comedy Festival.

Surely everyone appearing at the festival is funnier than Gary Wilmot.

Additional note: there are Leicester Comedy Festival shows on BBC 7 (that`s the digital radio station) at 11pm this Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. They`ve been pretty good in previous years.

RE: Leicester Comedy Festival.

It`s ace. If I lived on Leicester I`d probably be out every night and bankrupt!

Off to see Mark Steel @ Loughborough Town Hall, meant to get tickets for Stephen K. Amos but they sold out fast.

If Tim Minchin wasn`t the same night as Steel, would definitely have gone to that.

Probably going to see David O`Doherty in Derby next month.

Would also recommend:-

Mark Watson (again catching him in Derby in a few weeks)
Mitch Benn
Henning Wehn
Shazia Mirza
Robin Ince
Isy Suttie
Rhod Gilbert
Mark Thomas
Miles Jupp
Andy Parsons
Fred MacAulay
Jo Caulfield
Ed Byrne
Josie Long

RE: What book are you reading now?

So far this year I`ve read:-

1 - Kathy Reichs - Death du Jour
2 - Harlan Coben - Hold Tight
3 - Harlan Coben - The Innocent
4 - Scott Pratt - An Innocent Client
5 - Val McDermid - Dead Beat

I`m currently reading...actually I can`t really tell you about it as I`m "beta reading" a new book by an American writer which isn`t even published until November... It`s a good book, but you`ll have to wait another 10 months to find out about it!
