Noisy Neighbours!

Need some help and advice here if you can please!

Live in a town house and have noisy neighbours next door (terrace) which tends to be on Friday/Saturday nights. This has probably happened about 12 or so times in the last year, and I am really fed up with it now.

I have been round there a few times and asked them to turn the music off - usually around 2/3am - and am either greeted with a `sorry` or like I got last night a mouth-full of abuse from someone who doesn`t even live there tellling me to `chill out, its a party and its Saturday night` >:( >:( If it wasn`t a girl I am sure I would have punched the person!

I did try to get the police involved but they didn`t want to know and was advised to `log` days and times by the council, which is very difficult to get consistency as is not every weekend.

I know that they are renting the house, is there anyway I can find out who the letting agent/landlord is without going through the tenant so as to make a complaint?

whatever official line you go through, the response will be the same. Keep a diary of every disturbance, detailing time, nature (music/shouting/banging) and duration of disturbance. Also note wether or not you physically ask them to keep the noise down (always ask politely) and the response you get. As you say, it`s once a month, so that would probably only result in a strongly worded letter

The instance you speak of would probably just mean a letter to the tenants, to which they`ll reply that they won`t invite that particular person around again. I`ve had experience of this all my adult life. It was worse at the flat, druggies and prostitutes all day. One night the people in the flat downstairs has loud music until 4am. tried complaining but got fobbed off. Truthfully, that was the only time we ever heard any noise from their flat in the 7 years we lived there. We thought it would be better when we moved to this sleepy little village. Well, it is now. One side split up, and he married someone else before his ex (who still lives next door) had his baby. Another neighbour hung himself last year (allegedly). One had a nervous breakdown and ran out into the close in just her knickers screaming the devil was in her bed, and our immediate neighbour (a constant source of shouting and screaming) has just been put away for having over 5000 indecent images on his computer.

Like I said, it`s nice and quiet now...

Having nuisance neighbours is an absolute nightmare and I empathise with you as we had it from both sides at our last house.

Follow all of Stantz`s advice and also get a noise recorder from the council.

First and foremost speak to your neighbours during the day when everyone is sober and try and reach an amicable agreement between yourselves. If this fails just keep reporting them to the police.

There is a forum called NFHIB that you might want to take a look at.

hello quick question ....
do your next door neighbours work in the week?
if so is it not possible to book a few days off in the week and well party till 6am,
even if it means put your music on full and go in a hotel over night.
it could back fire and not bother them and next time they party they might say
well we did not complain about you,
but they might just take a hint,

The powers that the police DON`T have to help the innocent party in this situation are incredible. We had an issue recently, and I was told (paraphrasing, but almost exactly these words): "We could go round to the house and ask them to turn it down, but since the noise is within their own property, they could tell us to F-off and we couldn`t do a thing about it."

That can`t be right, unless it`s different in England.
When I had noisy neighbours, the police were pretty damned helpful.
Even when it escalated to the point that I put my fist through the neighbour`s front door and told him I was going to kill him, they were helpful in the back of the black maria. ;)
They `assisted` me in compiling a statement which would make things look better for me.
So I got off with having to pay for repairs to the door and a warning.
Best £60 I ever spent, because the bloke was absolutely terrified from that point on and I no longer heard `Waltzing Matilda` by Rod Stewart at 2AM. >:(

Your local council should have a dedicated noise team though, under the environmental health department, maybe.
As has been suggested, write things down.
I`d even embellish it a bit, to suit you.
Their word against yours, you`re the one with written records. ;)
They will end up getting their stereo confiscated quite quickly.

Or, as has been suggested, make it a `war`.
Do as you would be done by, mate.
If my neighbours are quiet, I`m the perfect neighbour.
If my neighbours are noisy, I`ll make their life hell.
I will not put up with it ever again (unlikely now though, as I live in a nicer area/detached house)

I couldn`t believe that the police had no powers, either, but that`s what I was told, and not just by one officer. On one occasion, I told them that they were forcing me to confront the individuals, where there would no doubt be an altercation due to the circumstances, and due to the drug abuse that I knew to be going on.

They weren`t interested in that, either.

The council do have a dedicated noise team, but won`t do anything other than send out a letter until about 12 weeks of written evidence is submitted.

Either kill them or move out - I`d go for the latter.
We lived in a terrace in London and had twats on either side, one side a couple and kid who just argued and smacked each other around all day - so I called social services :D The bloke got carted of by the Police and never came back.
The other side liked their stereo too much - my house sounded like the pub in Eastenders - muffled thumping of a bass. The guy was about 8 foot and built like a brick s***house so couldn`t really do anyhing.

Luckily we moved after about 3 years back up North and was able to afford a detached house and too be honest I will never ever ever live in anything except a detached.

Every time I gasp at my mortgage payments, I remember `flat life`.
Then all is fine again.
