Forum design?

John Rudge (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 12th May 2000, 12:37

Any chance of changing the forum style so that the full text of a thread can be seen at once. The current layout means that you have to select a message, read it, click the back button, wait on a refresh, and click the next message. This approach makes it time-consuming, and less likely that a user will take the time to read a full thread.

A good example of the forum style is at http://www.digiguide.com/forum/default.asp

Although you don`t actually have to click the back button (just scroll down) to view other messages we are aware that our forums have some shortcomings which need to be resolved.

The link you posted is to the UBB, which I agree is probably the best forum software out there. Although even that isn`t perfect.

Unforunately we`ve been very busy this last month or two sorting out server issues, a regular stream of competitions, hassling PR companies and loads more we can`t tell you about yet.

But now the web server is enjoying its brand new dual PIII-600 box and barely reaching an average of 5% cpu usage, we can start to make more changes to the site without worrying if it will keel over and die under the strain. ;-)

Hopefully soon I`ll have time to rewrite the forum code, after which you will be able to read an entire thread at the same time (like the UBB does) but it will still retain proper threading like our current system. I think this is probably the best compromise between the two and will be the most useable.
