Guitar strings question

sashenden (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 26th November 2009, 19:38

Recently started learning the guitar, and was wondering what reasonably priced guitar strings you might recommend for a newbie. The local guitar shop closed a while back or I would have gone and paid him and asked his advice.

It is my dads old acoustic Yamaha, which he has had for as long as I can remember. But now he has moved to Brazil it is mine, he hasnt played it for some time and didnt want to risk it in the plane hold. Has to be 30+ years old but still in a nice condition, nice tone I am told by my teacher. Does anyone have a preferred online suppier and brand? Ebay or online shop, doesn`t matter which.

And I sound like a broken record here and hope RJS doesnt think I am having a pop, but the Google search thing didn`t find the old guitar thread when I search for "guitar strings"

I don`t know what is going on with the google search. :/ I might have a look at it next week, in fact actually next week I may be starting on a bit of a redesign of DVD Reviewer, will be keeping the look and feel, it`s just time the 10 year old technology got a total rewrite. ;)

Anyway, back to the point, I get all my strings from http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/, they are very good on price and have a nice selection.

These were recommended to me a few years ago by a mate of mine who also suggested I get a string winder and this Fast Fret stuff for reducing fret noise (and stopping the grease from your fingers from ageing the strings too quickly).

Definitely get a winder, and find a nice guide on youtube on how to change your strings (it is seriously easy when you know how, and a total pain when you don`t).

As for what strings to get, ask your guitar teacher!

Likewise, I have never successfully found a thread using it. And you can`t `help it` by just searching in one forum - you just get a seemingly random result that you need to wade through - to then fail. :/ Tried it with one word, multiple words, + signs, quotes but still no joy. :(

Yeh, what happened to the old search thing? it was much better. I gave up with the new one after looking for a couple of threads as it was a waste of time.

why take life so seriously..its not like you are going to make it out alive

try actually going to google and search

guitar strings site:dvd.reviewer.co.uk

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&as_q=+guitar+strings&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=dvd.reviewer.co.uk&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images

Couldn`t migrate it to the new server, and it had also become rather slow. I suspect I just need to reconfigure the google one a bit better, if its finding the right stuff normally.

You know, that honestly didn`t cross my mind. DOH! :D

I see him every 2 weeks as he is in demand, but I am good until I see him next time.

Can I be nosey and ask how much he charges and is it one to one or a group lesson.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

It is one to one, at my place, and he charges £25 for an hour.

I think I`ll just have to carry on with a bit of idle plunking.
