What are the customs charge for importing Blurays?

rehan (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 4th February 2010, 08:27

I want to but the Watchemen Ultimate Edition on Blu-ray,

which is only released in the US but has been confirmed as region free. The best deal is at Play USA at £27.99

When you purchase it it says
Quote:
The product you have selected will be shipped from North America and may be subject to import duties and taxes once it reaches your country. These and any additional charges must be borne by you. If you agree to pay these additional charges should they be levied click I AGREE below.

How much would I pay on customs? I thought there was a limit where you didnt have to pay.

Taken from here

Quote:
If you buy goods online from Jersey or Guernsey
Customs duty will not be charged.
Import VAT is charged if the value of the goods is £18 and over.
Many Channel Islands companies are part of a 'VAT pre-payment' scheme. This means you will be asked to pay import VAT if the value of the goods is over £18 at the time you pay for the goods. In this case you will not have to pay any additional costs when you receive your goods.
Excise Duty will be charged for some goods, for example alcohol and tobacco.

Technically, the rate of duty on DVDs is 3.5%
Duty is calculated on the cost of the goods + any shipping costs.
VAT is then payable on the grand total (yes, you pay VAT on duty too).

HMRC no longer collect duty totalling less than £9 or on items of less than £135 in value, but you will have to pay VAT. A breakdown can be seen here. However, there will be an £8 Royal Mail handling fee on top of that, so once you add it up you`re going to be looking at over £40 if it does get inspected. If you want it without the guesswork and without a potential customs hold up then you could get it from here.

Oh, and Movietyme have it for about £36, but I`m not entirely sure if they`re still customs friendly.

I ordered this from Amazon.com for about $39.95.

I got hit with a charge of £13.03.  £3.03 was for VAT and £10 was Royal Mail International Handling fee.

This was ordered on 01/01/10 and arrived about a week ago...
