Polish people capture and eat swans? Myth?

RJS (undefined) posted this on Sunday, 8th August 2010, 12:03

Yet again I`m walking the dog talking to other owners round my lake, and someone brings up the idea that east europeans take and eat the swans and the ducks.

Well I`ve heard this a few times before, yet never ever seen anyone offer any first hand evidence, it`s always something they thought happened everytime wildlife disappeared. Me, I`m not convinced, so I`ve been googling trying to find any info.

Best I can manage in the way of proof is a few forum threads saying its true, again no actual proof or even first (or second or third) hand accounts of witnessing it.

Against, it all seems to come down to articles in the... yes you guessed it... Daily Mail. Who seem to be the only place offering any "evidence".

If I remember tonight I`ll ask the doormen for the Casino we cover.
Two of them are Polish but pretty decent so if it`s true I wouldn`t expect to see them running around the local park chasing the birdies but they should know if it`s a myth or not.

Swans are related to duck\geese, I seem to recall there was a case in Devon regarding a swan being eaten.

I always thought they were protected\owned by the crown ie "Royal meat", but wiki reports swans enjoy statutory protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Never has so little had to be explained by me to so many so often.

When I was at uni, an Oriental student got into trouble as he had captured some of the ducks and swans on the dock pond in the uni grounds for food!

Considering the time to catch one and all the preperation and hassle involed they could earn more then enough in the same time span and then to go to Iceland or Tesco and buy a couple of large chickens.so urban myth from me.

I said it before and I`ll say it again: "Blu-Ray is the solution to a problem nobody had."

Basbat, that`s kind of what I thought.

Keen on hearing what Jimbo`s polish friends say. There is a polish forum where they are constantly moaning about the Daily Mail slagging off the polish and posting anything to make them look bad.

Did you hear one of the questions on Shooting Stars this week? Think it was:

"Daily Mail readers believe that Poland is empty, True or False"

or something like that. ;)

Robert John Shepherd says...
Keen on hearing what Jimbo`s polish friends say.
Conversation went summat like this:

"Piotr... summat tae ask ye... guy on one of the forums was askin about Polish people and some rumour ye catch n eat swans... is it bull or any truth in it?"

"Swans?"

"Aye, big birds... long neck, white.. massive wings.. usually where there`s ducks"

"I know what swan is...I like duck. Not swan, never eat swan"

"Aye but does it happen? Ye know, anywhere else that ye`ve heard of?"

"Never heard of it. Sounds like boo-ls-sheet to me. Just duck."

"aye, but ye don`t go doon the park n catch them first, dae ye?"

"No..FFS... we go to Asda or Tescos!"

Think that answered yer question and it was as funny sounding a conversation as you can probably imagine from that ;) Piotr does have that Polish accent/inflection to his voice, he`s about 6 ft 3 and I`m 5 10" so could probably have turned it into a stand up routine... all we needed were some ducks n swans running around :D
