Question to anyone who has lost a toe nail (Warning ...gruesome story)

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 25th August 2010, 22:57

My wife stubbed and lifted her toe nail about four weeks ago.

Outside a little brusing it looked ok at the time, but after having a bath last night, she screamed and I rushed in to find her pointing to her big toe nail.

The toenali was hanging off and I was expected to sort it out, ugg !

It had sheared away at the root and on the right side, so was just holding on the left side.

I used steralised sizzors (boiling water over them) then cut off the offending hanging toe nail, leaving just an edge of nail along the length of the left hand side where it is in the groove of the toe`s skin. I did not want to pull it off in case of bleeding.

Now here is the question....

There is still some of the old toe nail fixed firmly in the toe on the left hand side and the new toenail is growing in from the root. (That I assume was what pushed the old toe nail out from the root)

Does this remaining part of the old toenail have to be taken out by a nurse so the new nail will grow without obstruction.

Or...

Will this old part of the nail along the left hand side groove get pushed out naturally.

She is not in any pain, but worried about the new toe nail growing in.

I got a thumb nail ripped off in an accident years ago also had a large part of a toe nail removed, I remember in both cases that the the damage nails took care of themselves with no trouble, the nail that is left should fall away and the new nail should replace it with no trouble or pain, but if in doubt or she gets any severe pain see your doctor,I doubt that will happen though.

Nails are replaced all the time bit like a coveyer system.

I said it before and I`ll say it again: "Blu-Ray is the solution to a problem nobody had."

It will be fine :)

I lost one toenail after my marathon ( 2nd toenail.lifted from the quick and had to be cut off at the top) I`m currently holding my big toenail on with steri strips as it had lifted from the quick but nailbed is still attached in the middle! If I don`t put steri`s on it it just lifts and flaps around which is bloody painful!!

Nails are great at re growing but it may look different- nothing that a bit of nail polish wont hide. If the toe gets inflamed or pus comes out get it checked. Just keep it clean, dry and covered if shoes rub the area.

Unfortunately your wife is damaged and you will need a new one.

Simply place her in the nearest empty wheely bin and she will eventually be collected for recycling as a youtube viral.

Choose new wife from relevant Russian or Thai websites.

I smashed a big toe years ago, in a bike accident.
They said if it were any other toe, they`d have lopped it off.
But they`re reluctant to chop off big toes for balance etc.
Anyway, the original nail came out and new ones started growing back badly.
All sorts of pain, several operations to remove nails and try to kill the nail root/bed.
Nope, it kept growing back.....
I now look after it myself, but it`s an ugly sod of a thing. :/

You haven`t seen my big toes! :D

When I was 14 both my big toe nails starting in-growing.
They were left for a number of months (I don`t like doctors) and after numerous DIY attempts involving pliers etc. I finally relented and went to see the doc.
They basically said "they`re too far gone and they`ll need to come out".

So I had local anaesthetic in each toe (and then some more due to anaesthesia not working as well on me for some reason - always been that way)....and then he pulled what was left of the nails out, and then scraped the roots out as well!

I had little elastic bands around the toes to stop the blood squirting out. When the op was done he said "We have two sorts of people in here...squirters and screamers, let`s see which one you are". Elastic bands came off - squirts of blood came flying out :D

Anyway, I haven`t had any big toe nails since!

Thanks for the gruesome stories, guys, uggh ! some will be hard to forget.

Well I started the thread, so can`t say anything :D

Anyway, the wife is going to see the nurse tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks.
