Too old to be trendy...?

skirpy (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 29th December 2010, 00:29

Hiya,

From the day i started work - 22 years ago, i have always paid lots of money to wear the latest trendy/fashionable clothes. I did this because, up until i started working my family were quite poor and i always dreamed to wear the latest fashions.

Now that i have turned 40....i feel like i need to tone down a bit.....i realised this when my 16 year old nephews are stealing my clothes for the weekend (:¦

I am starting to feel a little uncomfortable wearing trendy clothes now!

I don`t want to do what my married mates have done - go about wearing slip on shoes and track suit bottoms :D .....sad!

I like this jacket.... here but i am sure i wore one of these every year in primary school in the 70s....weird eh?
?

I guess i am going through some mid life crisis :)

You should be flattered they are, imho. ;)

Anyone who says you are too old for something, is basically saying you should be waiting to die!

I have always loved my clothes, other half has 1 wardrobe i have 2 (and underbed drawers lol) Still get people surprised when i tell them my age (genuine i think, not the open eyed no u dont say) , still listen to uptodate music, like my rap, r&b, upto minute chart stuff (some) obviously gadget mad and still play my pc games, I have a xbox 360 and a wii and PS3 (as well as psp somewhere)

The thing is for me WHEN you wear stuff, I mean I wear a suit at work to be more business like rather than the high wasters some wear around my age (YIKES no ones told them?) but i can wear it casual at night and just walking around im happy in my hoody and jeans and t-shirt as someone else said in this and another thread your only as old as u feel, no one will ever tell me im old...ill know myself ;)

Trainers, jeans, T shirt or sweat shirt depending on the
season.
59 and been wearing much the same since I was 19.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

I don`t think the type of clothes is important.
But you definitely have to watch what brands you wear once you hit 40.
There are brands that a +40 year old could look a little daft wearing.
For example, a pot bellied bloke in a pub look stupid wearing a `Rip Curl` hoodie.
And styles are important too.
Evidently, a +40 year old shouldn`t wear jeans that are hanging off their arse.

:B

It`s nice to keep up with fashion to a degree but I think once your gettin on with age go to the classic style that never goes out of fashion, correct color and fit is important too.

2 words that I hate when it comes to clothes!! Makes me think of M&S round neck jumpers that my mother insists every woman should have in their waredrobes!!

You do have to be careful your jeans cover your arse and that your t-shirt isnt tucked in if you have a belly but as long as us slighlty `older` people are sensible then I dont see the problem about keeping up with fashion. Im a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl but have ventured into dresses over leggings etc this year. My neice told me she had gone and bought the same top as me as she liked mine so much......she is 18 (and obviously has great taste in clothes ;) )

it`s funny, at work the other day, 2 guys (20 something and 30 something) were taking the  mick out of what the 19 year old was wearing, he assured us what he was wearing was very trendy, looks like he had quite possibly bought the exact clothes a mannequin in River Island/Top man, wherever the "kids" go these days ;)

he took the mick back saying he hoped when he got old he didn`t start looking like the guys who started the argument.

My missus sometimes asks me if I`m not too old to be wearing some of my t shirts, but that may be because they`re concert shirts from a metal band I saw 15 years ago, so not sure if it`s the picture, the tattiness, the age of shirt, my age, or a combo of all that which makes me too old ;)

Don`t companies like Levis, Nike etc go to great lengths to make clothes they think only young ppl will wear. For example Levis started more frequently launching new ranges when 501s were being worn by the older generation, the shop may as well have an over 30s and unders 30s divions rather than m/f ;)

I think I had a point, but I`m not sure what it is, I`ve never been a massive follower of fashion, I like my Nike trainers etc, but if you think you look ok, and feel comfortable in what you wear I don`t think it matters.

To me you`d probably look no sillier than the 19 year old at work did in his plimsoles, baggy jeans (MC Hammer style I`m sure I had some similar when I was a kid), top, and over long wooly hat :)

Funnily enough, I bought a similar jacket today but I bought the canvas style one.

I`m 41 by the way and couldn`t really give a monkeys what anyone thinks about what I wear but is usually jeans with an `earthy` coloured t shirt.

As long as you are not an overweight slob wearing a football shirt just wear what you like!

I dont think Ive ever been `trendy`I wear what I wear and every now and again suddenly find myself wearing something thats the current trend, it reminds me of the time at school that `Bros` were about and Doc Martin shoes were the trend, I was suddenly cool cos I wore Docs, ....odd cos nobody noticed me wearing them for the previous 4 years lol

I pretty much wear now what I did in my teens, Adidas trainers, jeans, tshirts/polo shirts, hoodies, and a fishtail parka when its chilly...I suppose Im a mixture of hip hop and Mod :D

I couldnt care less weather Im trendy or not, if I like something I`ll buy it, but I suppose theres a point where Id look daft in some clothes. I may be almost 40 but its gonna be a long time before you find me in Marks and Sparks buying some cord trousers and a cardigan!
