Must have home tools...

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 6th March 2014, 09:25

I'm going to buy a house soon with GF and at the moment I only own a flat top and Philips screwdriver! I've totally accepted that now I'll be spending many a weekend doing DIY so I fancy building up a bit of a toolset!  First purchase is going to be a decent cordless drill/screwdriver and spare battery.  Anyone have any recommendations on one? Also, what else should I have in the garage as a minimum for the 'odd job'? Ross

glass hammer, sky hooks, tartan paint...

You could just buy some sort of all in one general toolkit and add to it as and when you need it.

No bad idea to get the general toolkit but take it from me you will still be wearing a rut in the road to B & Q or your nearest equivalent.

Been living in this house since 1991 and still buy new stuff several times a year.

Don't forget the long weight. Essential bit of kit. I also recommend skirting board ladders and a left-handed screwdriver. Might want to pick up a tin of elbow grease as well.

A rubber mallet!

You will never cease to be amazed at how often you'll want to tap/bash something with a hammer but not damage it.

A pair of normal pliers (for cutting wire and pulling things out of walls) is always handy, as is a pair of needle nose pliers, curved ones particularly.

I have a garage and shed full of tools, and the spare bedroom has the cupboard full of (you've guessed it) more tools.

My wife threatens to move out if I buy an other tool... but you can never get enough tools, as each one does a different thing.

As 'whatsisname*' once said, 'give us the tools and we will do the job'.

* mind blank at present .

Toolstation or Screwfix will be your best friend... personally after replacing endless Black & Decker/McKeller etc tools... I bit the bullet and bought a medium priced Ryobi set of drill/driver etc from Screwfix... 18v is minimum you should be looking at, and to have at least two batteries.

They also do decent sets of screwdrivers etc... Toolstation are slightly cheaper, but I have to drive 20 miles there, or 4 to Screwfix!  They also do free next day delivery... as for the DIY Sheds they are all much of a much, I tend to like Wickes as better value

B&Q own Screwfix, and Wickes own Toolstation...

For big jobs I get a local professional in... I don't mind a rewiring a plug, fitting a light, or painting, hanging wallpaper, but anything I am unsure about I would rather pay to have it done right first time!
